This elegant house was built in 1934, a cool retreat for wealthy Catalans. A stone arch and a wooden gate open to three outdoor levels, peaceful and charming with unusual trees and hidden corners, magnolias, roses and vines, stone statues, hammocks and ponds. Inside: large African paintings and bright Mediterranean colours; Elena and Luis live nearby and look after it beautifully. You get a high-ceilinged sitting room, its windows roundly arched, its furniture comfortably minimalist, with natural fabrics and big pale sofas. The kitchens – there are two – are rustic, attractive and self-contained; the dining room has a hugely long table. Bedrooms are less spacious but equally polished, some up in the loft with a chalet-like feel; bathrooms have large sinks and antique oval mirrors. And then there’s that garden, with its tumbling terraces, playhouse and swings, pelota, ping pong, basketball and bikes, barbecue and pool. A brilliant base camp from which to explore Catalunya as a whole.
