Ramble in ancient oakwoods, cycle in the foothills of Ben Lomond, row (or wade) out to the Lewis's private loch island, come and lose yourself in the majesty of the landscape. Blairhullichan, originally a Victorian shooting lodge, sits in its own 40 acres of land, including half a mile of Loch Ard's shore where you can fish for trout, pike and perch. Awake to birdsong in one of three bright bedrooms, soak in a roll-top tub, breakfast in the sheltered courtyard, picnic on the island. The house was once part of the Duke of Montrose's Estate – in 1694 the annual rent was £38 6s 8p plus a stone of butter and a chicken – and you are staying in the oldest wing; the dining room dates from the 1600s and was once a game larder (hence the hook in the ceiling!). The snug galley kitchen looks out to lawns; the sitting room has a wood-burning stove, games and books galore – and masses of information on where to go. The Trossachs, Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle are close, Kinlochard's tea room and village store is a five-minute walk. Bridget lives in the main house; come at teatime and you'll be greeted with tea and homemade shortbread, arrive later and she'll offer you a little tipple.
