Close the rustic-electronic gate on the road, turn towards a flourish of trees, flowers and birds, and settle into country peace. A real house, sophisticated taupe-toned 'Marquise' has lots of space for families in its open-plan ground-floor living space, a touch of contemporary humour in the pink clockface that adorns the dark brown wall, and a deeply nostalgic creak to its original staircase. You will sleep soundly up there, after abluting in a splendid white and grey bathroom. A wall in the children's room is all blackboard – felt pens provided. Back outside, a pair of life-size sheep on the patio lawn welcome you to darling little rustic 'Bergerie'. It is bright and couple-cosy, warmed by a fine wood-burner. Both houses have chef-worthy kitchens, good relaxing furniture and a whole wall of storage space. Also, a wee patio each to carry table, chairs and barbecue and a shared piece of lawn. Just over the hedge, your generous, helpful host family, who have children of their own, provide kitchen basics and will do your first-day shopping if you ask.
