The Experience

Small but perfectly formed, this former piggery has all you need to explore this secret spot right at the toe of Cornwall. The leafy lane leads you down to Gillan Cove – take a morning dip, or hire a boat and explore the Helford from the water.

Everything is cleverly packed into this sweet space: a practical kitchen with basics for cosy supper by the log burner, a private deck and a comfy double bed with a window to the night sky; perfect for romantic weekends. Paulette can provide ready-to-heat dinners for late night arrivals, or if you just don’t fancy cooking.

Pack the picnic hamper and head off on the coast path. In Helford, an hour’s walk, the summertime ferry will whisk you across the river to explore Glendurgan and Trebah gardens. Stop for a revitalising pint in the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage. Head to Cadgwith for fresh mackerel from the fishmonger’s and sea shanties in the pub – quintessential Cornwall.

Reviews

The perfect romantic escape, compact Oink is only a few minutes' walk from beautiful Gillan Cove at the head of a secluded creek — hire kayaks, paddleboards or dinghies and spend days drifting between coves on the Helford or moseying around the Lizard's coastline. Return to this converted piggery for a barbecue on the terrace or a drink in front of the wood-burner.

Location

The neighbourhood

You pass through a string of tiny thatched villages to get here. The farm is hidden down a leafy lane that leads all the way down to Gillan Cove. Hire boats at St Anthony, on the opposite side of the cove. The New Inn, a beautiful thatched pub in Manaccan, serves food and is a half-hour walk. There are stunning beaches all along the coastline, and Lizard Point is a 30-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Paulette Colman

  • Gillan Cove is a picturesque inlet and quiet beach with direct access to the South West Coast Path towards Porthallow or Falmouth. Enjoy messing around on the water or relax on the beach with a picnic and great views of Falmouth and St Mawes.
  • Gillan Creek runs inland from Gillan Cove and is perfect for kayaking, or stand-up boarding, up to Carne Mill at high tide to view the wooded creek at close quarters. There is also a lovely NT footpath that follows the creek up to Carne and beyond.
  • The Helford River is a sailers paradise. It is home to all forms of boating activities from small rowing boats to bigger yachts. Visitors are welcome at the Helford River Sailing Club, for a drink, meal or temporary membership.
  • There are plenty of Cornish character pubs within easy driving distance, or the nearest a 30mins walk. Serving good hot food in a relaxing atmosphere, often with outdoor seating and great views of the coast and countryside. See our website for details.
  • Walk the unspoilt Frenchmans Creek or visit a typical harbour: Mullion, Coverack,Cadgwith and Porthleven are nearby. The dramatic Lizard Point and beautiful Kynance cove are well worth a visit for the drama of feeling at the most southerly point
  • There are plenty of gardens for inspiration: the NT gardens of Glendurgan, Trelissick and Godolphin are a short drive. Also the tropical gardens of Trebah overlooking the Helford and the fascinating Tremenheere Sculpture garden with views of Mounts Bay.

Introducing

Paulette Colman

Quitting the capital for a quieter life, Cornwall was the perfect place for Paulette and Andrew to indulge their love of sailing and walking. They live in the farmhouse just up the lane. Paulette, who works in sustainable textiles, designed the interior of Oink to reflect the natural beauty outside; Andrew did much of the building work, and already has his eye on another outbuilding...
