The Experience

There’s real warmth and a hint of romance in the air here. This attractive Edwardian villa was author Rosamunde Pilcher’s childhood home, there are dreamy views of the garden from airy bedrooms, and Marie greets you with tea and cake.

Breakfast is served at a shared table overlooking the garden – with the sun streaming in through the huge bay window. It’s a generous spread including fruit, yogurt, cheese and meats. Jams, marmalades and breads are mostly homemade and delicious.

Walk to the flawless sands of Porthkidney, spot the many birds on the estuary or play golf at the local course. Stroll down the terraced lawns and you’ll reach a tiny station, hop on a clifftop train and enjoy one of the most scenic routes in the country. Eight minutes of spectacular coastal views later and you can be exploring the galleries and beaches of St Ives. Have a drink from the trolley in the evening then head out to a cosy pub.

Reviews

Marie is the most wonderful host! She's on hand as much or as little as you wish and provides lots of thoughtful touches. The bedrooms are light, bright and have gorgeous views onto the estuary. This place is a peaceful hidden gem, perfectly located to explore nearby towns and the Cornish coastline.

A fabulous weekend treat at the The Firs celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary. The most stylish B&B we have stayed in. Our beautiful room with its large bay window had views over the river. Our wonderful host Marie was so accommodating and welcoming, but also knew exactly when to give you your own space. The B&B is perfectly located for day trips into St Ives on the coastal train just at the end of the garden. Lovely walk to the beach. Amazing breakfast! Thank you, Maria & Nick.

When you have the perfect stay in a lovely building with a brilliant host it is unwise to leave a review, because others will follow. But The Firs should receive the accolades that will pile up. Nothing was too much trouble for Marie and she made our stay comfortable beyond reasonable expectations. Many thanks Mark and Kathy.

Fabulous 3 day stay. Exceeded all our expectations. We felt well cared-for in beautiful surroundings. Especially enjoyed our in depth discussions with Marie about Rosamunde Pilcher.

We visited the Firs with our friends from New Zealand and we were all amazed with the hospitality we received from Marie. From the local gin and tonic in the early evening before we went out, to the delicious breakfast that took account of one of our groups gluten and dairy free diet, everything was perfect. The rooms were very comfortable and beautifully decorated and the house was ideally located for reaching St. Ives by train. A wonderful pre birthday treat.

This property is absolutely beautiful and by far the best B & B we have ever stayed in. Marie's attention to detail throughout is incredible & the breakfasts are out of this world! We felt so relaxed and at ease, our stay was completely delightful! The decor is gorgeous (amazing wallpapers), the scenery is stunning (especially from the bedroom bay window) & the wonderful warm welcome makes "The Firs" the most perfect place to stay. We can't wait to return!!

Marie is a perfect host – she's friendly and welcoming yet also makes you feel so at home that you're free to come and go as you wish. The room was beautiful, super stylish and clean, and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast is a real treat of fresh fruit, homemade delights, pastries, a variety of cheese, ham and salmon plus a hot dish. I would love to return for a longer stay and would highly recommend!

Marie was an amazing host, she made us feel very welcome and her high attention to detail was apparent in every aspect of our stay. The breakfast was beautifully presented and tasted deleicious. We stayed in the blue room and it was very clean and comfortable. We stayed for 4 nights and loved every minute, we would definitely recommend The Firs to anyone looking to stay in the area. The local train was a great and there are loads of places to see in the surrounding areas. Thank you Marie for your hospitality. James and Louise x

We stayed at The Firs for 3 nights. Marie is a wonderful host. Nothing is too much trouble and she was happy for her guests to come and go. Everything was spotless and very comfortable. Our bathroom newly and beautifully fitted but no shower. The breakfasts were out of this world and with the train station across the road at the bottom of the garden, my husband’s morning commute to his art course in St Ives was easy and idyllic.

Sue, Exeter

Just enjoyed a fabulous stay at The Firs! Marie is the most wonderful host from the second you arrive. You are made to feel very welcome in this absolutely beautiful home with gorgeous rooms and lovely views. Breakfast on both days was delicious and it is extremely handy that the train station is just at the end of the garden (and Saltings a little further up). Would hugely recommend staying at The Firs, you won't be disappointed! :)

We stayed 2 nights at The Firs - wish we’d stayed longer. Marie provides truly exceptional hospitality. Our room was immaculate and full of little touches that made our stay special (flowers in the room, postcard - with stamp!) Breakfasts were plentiful and delicious. It was great to be able to leave the car and take the lovely little coastal train to St Ives when visiting galleries and restaurants, as on a visit some years ago we found parking in St Ives could be difficult. Highly recommended.

Anne, Chester

This was the highlight of our trip in terms of where we stayed and we could not have been happier. Marie is a delightful host, the house is wonderful, the bedroom comfortable spacious yet cozy, the bathroom immaculate, although it would be nice to have a full shower. Marie’s breakfasts were so tempting even though we try to eat light in the morning . Getting the little train into Saint Ives couldn’t be easier and is certainly much better than trying to drive in and park. I wish we could have stayed twice as long.

Stevie, WASHINGTON

We had a wonderful stay at The Firs - the house is beautiful, spotlessly clean and comfortable and the garden is lovely and very well maintained. My mother and I were staying and we felt completely looked after. The breakfasts were delicious and Marie was a great host, providing excellent recommendations for restaurants in the area. There was such an attention to detail in every aspect and it was a brilliant location, just a train, bus or picturesque walk into St Ives but nice and calm to come back to after a day out. It was the best BnB we've ever been to - you will not be disappointed!

Location

The neighbourhood

Lelant is a quiet place, tucked away from the main road and with views of the Hayle Estuary for spotting waders and gulls. There is a pub 200 yards away, The Badger, plus a bistro and a restaurant in the village. The South West Coast Path is easily reached for hearty ups and downs with glorious views and wildflowers in spring. Find gorgeous beaches at Porthcurno and Sennen and plenty of NT places.

Local points of interest from Marie Britten

  • The Firs was the birthplace and childhood home of author Rosamunde Pilcher, OBE. Then called No. 2, The Elms, the house, beach and local area are clearly recognisable in her books which have sold 60m copies and been successfully televised across Europe.
  • Enjoy all aspects of a Cornish holiday from this, the narrowest part of Cornwall. Here the rugged, sandy North is only 7 miles from the gentler, wooded South. The almost island-like location creates the famous, intense blue light and mild climate.
  • Through the garden gate, the five beaches of St Ives are just 8 minutes on the stunning cliff-top train or 45 minutes on the coastal footpath. West Cornwall has 172 beaches but Lelant's dune-backed mile of golden sand is amongst Cornwall's quietest.
  • An important part of contemporary art-making for over 120 years, West Cornwall is still home to a vibrant community of artists and craftspeople. Guests are encouraged to explore beyond Tate St Ives and visit the numerous workshops and galleries on offer.
  • Climb Trencrom Hill behind Lelant, one of the few places in Britain where the sun both rises from and sets into the sea. With the greatest concentration of ancient sites in Europe, Penwith Peninsular has a landscape little changed since the Bronze Age.
  • Spring brings a series of classical concerts at venues across the West Cornwall peninsular, performed by visitors to the renowned International Musicians Seminar. The IMS is based at Prussia Cove, a beautiful location steeped in smuggling and intrigue.

Introducing

Marie Britten

Marie is a whizz. She's retired from a career in law but finds the time for working part-time in a vintage charity shop, running, yoga, village book clubs, looking after the garden (which opens for the NGS) and baking cakes to welcome guests.
