The Experience

This is a fantastic contemporary renovation of a Lakeland country house hotel. It sits on Ullswater in 18 beautiful acres that roll down to the lake shore. Both hotel and water offer lots to do. You can paddle board on the lake, jump in for a swim, or set off to explore in a kayak. If that sounds too energetic, head back to the hotel for sofas to sink into and an indoor 20-metre pool where walls of glass frame the view and adults reign after 6pm. The main building dates to 1714 and comes with ornate ceilings, marble fireplaces, the odd panelled wall. You’ll find an airy restaurant for super food, then sofas and banquettes in The Living Space, a child-friendly place to stop and eat, play games by the fire in the library, or slip onto the sun-trapping terrace where views shoot across the lake to mountains soaring beyond. There’s a gym, a hot tub, a sauna and treatment rooms, and forest school for kids. Rooms have fine beds, the best linen, robes in smart bathrooms. Most have the view, some have baths that look the right way. There’s a kitchen garden, a croquet lawn, and wellies at the front door, too.

Reviews

Just beautiful. Everything is so nicely done and of a really high standard, but we felt perfectly comfortable, even crashing in with shabby rucksacks. Can't beat the view from the pool (and the hot tub just outside). My girlfriend would probably say that the best thing was the massage she had, but for me it's the self-serve waffle makers at breakfast every time!
