The Experience
This is real country living, with cows, sheep and the occasional tractor clanking past. The sitting room has a little outdoor seating area and views of dry stone walls and the surrounding fells – the morning sun streams in here so it’s a great spot for your first cup of tea. The kitchen/dining area has a high ceiling and plenty of space, you’ll find all the kit you need, pottery mugs and some home-baked biscuits to welcome you.
Bedrooms (the downstairs one has a wet room and is wheelchair friendly, as is the whole of the ground floor) are fresh and homely with pine furniture and pretty views. A selection of books can be borrowed from the owners who live in the 400-year old farmhouse a little further up the drive. Mostly you’ll be longing to explore and there are grand walks and swims from the door.
Five minutes down the road is Ullswater, a great place for swimming and paddle boarding and you can walk ten minutes to a good pub.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's a very rural spot, with only a handful of other homes nearby. You can walk down to Ullswater for lakeside strolls, boat trips or an early morning swim. Walk to Aira Force waterfall and up to Gowbarrow Fell, with its views across the lake. Cycling is spectacular - the Fred Whitton Challenge and Tour of Britain go past the door some years. Penrith and Keswick are 15 minutes by car.
Local points of interest from Victoria & Jim Blease
- If its a break from the bustle of every day life, a place to unwind and relax, that you're looking for, we're sure Thornythwaite will tick all the right boxes. Everyone remarks on the peace and quiet here.
- Surrounded by beautiful countryside there are a wide variety of walks from the doorstep from wooded valleys to high mountain tops. A round of nearby Gowbarrow fell is our particular favourite with spectacular views high above Ullswater lake.
- Feeling adventurous? Fancy a dip? Ullswater lake is a hop and a skip away (5 minutes in the car, 40 minute walk) and has many sheltered bays for swimming....year round, if you're brave enough! Best to go early to have the place to yourself.
- Aira Force, a 70 foot waterfall spanned by a Victorian bridge at the top, is always a popular draw and is a great short walk (about 30 minutes) across the fields and through the woods. Its at its most dramatic after a good downpour.
- Most folks will find an excuse to end up at the local pub, The Royal, at some point during their stay, whether its for a post walk pint in the garden or a hearty meal by the stove. Handily its 5 minutes walk from Thornythwaite so there's no need to drive.
- Although we're off the beaten track we're handy for many of the popular areas of the Lake District. Keswick is just 20 minutes drive away and Ambleside just over half an hour. And of course the journeys are a pleasure in themselves with stunning scenery.

Introducing
Victoria & Jim Blease
With a passion for the outdoors, Victoria and Jim left their town lives some years ago in order to bring up their four children close to the land - running in the fells, dipping in the lakes, bringing up lambs and chickens. Initally they ran a B&B while they set up the self-catering spaces, and now focus exclusively on the cottages. They are kindly hosts, just at the end of the drive if you need.
It would be hard to imagine a warmer welcome than the one you get here - from the lovely couple Jim and Victoria, as well as from their gorgeous dogs! While you have many of the highlights of Lake District (like Aira Force nearby and Ullswater), you will feel that you are well away from the hustle and bustle of any touristy hotspots. The farm is so peaceful, you will leave feeling really refreshed.
