The Experience

The barn sits on the exceptionally pretty Tissington Estate near Ashbourne in the Peak District. The conservatory floods the house with light and the views across the rural landscape towards Carsington Water are exceptional. Solar panels, an air source heat pump and underfloor heating will keep you very cosy, but there’s a wood-burning stove in the large sitting room if you want an extra boost. Lovely to sit in here on a squashy sofa, snooze with a book, play a board game or just gaze at the view.

A neat-as-a-pin garden has sturdy fencing to keep livestock out and visiting dogs in. You’ll find a pretty patio with a wooden table and a barbecue for long summer days – break out the welcome hamper which includes a homemade cake from the village shop. Both bedrooms (one king size, one king size or twin) have the views and both have their own bathroom with Out of Eden soaps.

The kitchen has everything you need and a larder of basics.

Reviews

You will feel that this magical countryside is here solely for your enjoyment. Whether walking the Tissington Trail or exploring this glorious region, you will return to a welcoming home that has been renovated with style and great eco credentials. In winter you will be snug in front of the fire. The dramatic views towards Carsington Water are breathtaking. I would return in a heartbeat.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks and cycles start from the door and many of the views are unbeatable. Tissington has a jolly tea room for a cuppa and a cake (also a takeaway menu for picnics), a good butcher, a lovely Norman church and a candle-making shop. It's a lovely village to have a wander around. Ashbourne (five miles) is a pretty market town with winding cobbled streets and independent shops.

Local points of interest from Sir Richard FitzHerbert

  • Sir Richard inherited the estate and hall in 1989. He lives there with his wife Fiona and it is a home to their four children, five dogs, one cat and a plethora of other animals. The family looks forward to welcoming visitors from near and far every year.
  • Tissington is now most famous for two things: the 13 mile Tissington Trail which runs through the village and the annual Well Dressing Festival which takes place at Ascensiontide.
  • The village of Tissington offers a small gift/craft shop, a candle making shop, Tissington Plant Nursery and the award winning tearooms which offer excellent lunches as well as morning coffee and afternoon tea.
  • Nearest town is Ashbourne (3 miles.) A larger selection of shops including 3 supermarkets, banks, post office, petrol station, pubs and restaurants can be found.
  • Tissington sits in the Peak District National Park, and is perfectly placed to explore.
  • Other places of interest are Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Buxton, Cromford Mills, Matlock, to name a few.
