The Experience

Feel yourselves unwind easily in this 1800s barn, with your own entrance and an un-overlooked garden. A lobby by the front door has hooks for jackets and space for muddy boots, then you walk straight in to an open-plan living room with linen sofa and comfy chair, an electric fire for extra warmth and glow, good lighting and soft colours. A table at the window looks over the quiet lane and there are GWR and London Underground posters linking London with Devon.

You’ll find all the kit you need in the snazzy kitchen along with a bountiful welcome hamper: bread, butter, eggs, bacon, posh crisps and thoughtful treats. On sunny days you can sunbathe in the garden on teak loungers with squishy covers and, when evening falls, get the gas barbecue going and sizzle something delicious.

The shower is sparkling and roomy, the bed is smartly dressed, lighting is designed for readers and you should sleep deeply in the profound peace.

Reviews

A joy to be surrounded by such gorgeous rolling countryside for beautiful walks up hill and down dale, through forests, glimpsing the coast line as you get nearer. But it's a very short hop to the Jurassic coast for swimming, picnics, ice cream and boats. The best of both worlds here and a super little retreat to come home to.

Location

The neighbourhood

Colyton is two miles and has pubs, a café and a few small shops. Blackbury Camp is a 45-minute puff up the hill for gorgeous views, or a five-minute drive if you're feeling less hearty – it's all flat at the top. Honiton has bigger shops and a bustling market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for tasty local food; the wide beach at Lyme Regis is just lovely for swimming, sunbathing and fossil hunting.

Local points of interest from Anthony Letcher

  • With access to coast and country pack your walking boots and swimming cozzie. Blackberry Camp is a 45 minute walk, whilst Branscombe beach is just over 10 minutes by car.
  • Explore the South West Coastal Path in East Devon and nearby Dorset. Particular favourites are the walks around the Golden Cap, one of the highest points on the Southern coast.
  • The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site runs 95 miles east from Exmouth to Old Harry’s Rocks near Swanage in Dorset and is easily accessible at Beer, Sidmouth and Branscome, fancy paddleboarding or sea canoeing?
  • Eat delicious local produce from nearby sea and land that will get your tastebuds tingling and check out some amazing farm emporia at Greendale and Darts Farm that stocks the best of the Southwest. Visit the Darts farm website for more information.
  • Star quality dining; East Devon and nearby Dorset has some amazing places to eat. Glebe House is above us and Robin Wylde, The Oyster & Fish House and Lympstone Manor are all between 20 and 40 minutes drive from Underhill Barn.
  • Along the A303 to us, the National Trust have some great attractions en-route, Stourhead & Tintinhull Gardens or if the weather isn’t so great, Montacute house or Lytes Cary Manor.

Introducing

Anthony Letcher

Anthony and Lance live in the other half of the barn and are extremely friendly and helpful. They wanted to move to the West Country for many years but busy careers in London along with family commitments got in the way. They look after you with aplomb and are very happy to be here, along with Tilly the tabby cat, who also prefers Devon.
