The Experience

With two sitting rooms, six bedrooms and five bathrooms these two lovely places are just the ticket for getting together with friends or family. Both main house and adjoining cottage have a homely, comfortable feel with antique furniture, books and games for rainy days, pretty fabrics on sofas, nothing too modern. The cottage kitchen is perfectly well kitted-out but the main house kitchen is ample for everyone to cook together and eat – doors open to the patio for outdoor meals.

You’re surrounded by three acres of wild gardens and the river Piddle running through it for paddling, making dams, charging about in wellies and generally letting off steam safely. Bedrooms are a mix of doubles and singles – one with a pull-out bed – and one of the bathrooms is a tad old-fashioned but this is a house and cottage to share with people you know well and who will enjoy the higgledy-piggledy layout.

Walk onto the Wessex Ridgeway for views.

Reviews

It's all in the location and outdoors. There is so much to love about this place. It may not be for you if you're looking for the most contemporary decor or you want to spend all day in your bedrooms. This is a place just be in the countryside with your own mini leisure centre and oodles of endless spaces to sit together and while away the hours over meals and good conversations.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in the village of Piddletrenthide, surrounded by rolling hills and wonderful landscape. From the house you can't see any neighbours and the nearest village is Cerne Abbas, a mile and a half away – you can walk along footpaths or a B road to find three pubs, a village shop and post office. The Brace of Feathers in Plush is pet-friendly and has a good menu.

Introducing

Lucy Stoddart

Lucy, extremely relaxed and informal, lives on the property with her daughter, horse, pony and a friendly cat by the name of Blossom. She used to run an events management business in London, then lived on a farm in a village nearby. She bought the cottage – which was three separate properties in the 18th century – when it was in an extremely unloved state and restored everything herself.
