The Experience

Perfect Evershot and rolling countryside lie at the door of this 400-year-old gem in Thomas Hardy country. Natalie and Richard have run it with passion for many years – it’s very much a traditional inn; locals sup pints of Otter Ale in the long flagstoned bar and guests sample good food sourced within 25 miles.

In the dining room, the atmosphere changes to rural country house with smartly laid tables, soft lighting and elegant fireplaces. Good gastropub fare is taken seriously with head chef Ana Martins cooking delicious pub classics and some very imaginative dishes, earning two Rosettes. Little ones have their own menu, and colouring books and crayons to keep them busy while they wait. Service is helpful and friendly.

Bedrooms creak with age and style; there are antiques and fabric wall-coverings, super little bathrooms, perhaps a wonky floor or a four-poster. It’s worth splashing out on a larger room if you need lots of space.

Reviews

Quaint, historic village setting deep in rolling Dorset countryside for this traditional inn that was the model for Thomas Hardy's Sow & Acorn in Tess of the d'Urbervilles. An excellent rural base for exploring Hardy Country, with ten cosy rooms (three with authentic four-poster beds), interesting menus that evolve with the seasons, and a cracking bar that's the hub of the community.

We couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The staff are so welcoming and made us feel very special. Our room was charming, the meals in the comfortable dining room were delicious and the lounge was a welcome refuge on a rainy morning. We highly recommend the Acorn Inn.

We thoroughly recommend this inn as a great place for a break, particularly in current times. We would highlight the quality of the food, the confortahbe bedrooms, the lounge for residents, but above all what makes it special is the welcome from the staff. This is a very well managed place and a real pleasure to visit.

We stayed here for three nights and recommend the Inn very highly. Our room was very comfortable with excellent amenities. The staff were always attentive, helpful and cheerful. We will return.

After a cold and (very) wet day, dinner at the Acorn Inn was just the warm blanket I very much needed! The lasagna with rabbit and leeks was one of the best starters I ever had! The local cheeses delicious and severed at the right temperature, well done. Staff were very friendly and professional. Prefect evening!

Ralph, Amersfoort

My husband, Bulldog Boris & I had a wonderful stay here. The welcome was amazing. All of the staff were really helpful & the hospitality was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff even realised I must be gluten free & they asked & provided gluten free bread etc. I was so impressed, our whole stay was faultless. We will most definitely be back & I would highly recommend.

Alison

A beautiful and very ancient inn which exudes warmth and hospitality. I cannot speak highly enough of the Acorn Inn, its staff, the accommodation and the food. Everyone - from Reception, bar staff, and cleaning staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and all went out of their way to ensure that I was looked after. My room was beautiful, with a four poster bed and views to the front, overlooking Fore Street. I had a wonderful evening meal and a delicious breakfast. I will be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a super little village with a real community feel. Their sister hotel Summer Lodge do brilliant afternoon teas and you can join expert gardener Robin every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for a tour of the meticulous gardens. There's a 400-acre deer park at the bottom of the village with a footpath through it. Dorchester is 13 miles for a fast service from London Waterloo or Yeovil Junction.
