The Experience

You’re well looked after in this stylish B&B: breakfast is taken in the morning room facing the garden, or outside on sunny days. Start with homemade yogurt, fresh fruit, cereals and croissants with homemade jam, then move smoothly on to sausages from orchard-fed pigs, smoked salmon from the Severn & Wye Smokery up the road, honey from local bees and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

The entrance hall is thoughtfully kitted out with the means to make coffee or tea, and there’s always a seasonal treat – mince pies at Christmas, chocolate eggs at Easter – and plenty of information about the local area so you can plan your days. Between the two lovely bedrooms is a library with a chaise longue to retreat to.

The garden has year-round interest and plenty of seating. A public footpath runs along the riverbank and hearty souls can walk to Gloucester in 3 hours then get a taxi back to a very comfortable bed and a peaceful night.

Reviews

I lingered far too long in Marie-Clare's calm and easy company; the sense of relaxation here is palpable. Your host's impeccable sense of style makes it an aesthetically enjoyable place to put your feet up by the river for a few nights. Gloucester Docks, the Wye Valley, Stroud and the Cotswolds are all within reach for day trips and the Naight House garden's twists and turns are a delight.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're down a winding lane with the river bordering one side of the garden and a brook curling around the other. The Severn & Wye Smokery is 3.5 miles with restaurant open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays and good food to buy. The Lyon Inn at Westbury-on-Severn is 4.6 miles and Gloucester Docks with contemporary restaurants is a 10-minute drive. Explore the cathedral too with a guided tour.

Local points of interest from Marie-Clare

  • The Naight House Bed and Breakfast is situated on the banks of The River Severn. An ideal spot to watch the famous Severn Bore, a natural phenomenon when a large tidal wave surges up the river.
  • The garden provides a relaxing haven in which to unwind with plenty of benches scattered around. If you are feeling more active why not partake in a game of croquet on the front lawn?
  • The Naight House is approximately ten minutes’ drive from historic Gloucester and its Cathedral. It is twenty minutes from Cheltenham Spa, ideal for The Gold Cup and Literature Festival.
  • From late January to early February the riverbank and small wooded area are covered with blankets of snowdrops.

Introducing

Marie-Clare

Marie-Clare grew up on her parents' farm in Oxfordshire but left for London and a career as a stylist for fashion and interior shoots for magazines. Several decades later she found herself drawn back to the countryside and found The Naight House which she bought with her brother, and she has given it the full makeover. She lives in another part of the house with her miniature dachshund Lou-Lou.
