The Experience

The lovely old building had been closed for over a year before being rescued by the Scott/Lionhearth group. They’ve done a superb job and although the emphasis is now very much on food it’s still the hub of the village, welcoming local drinkers in the bar area. Dining rooms have flagged or wooden floors, stone fireplaces with smouldering logs and a lovely atmosphere.

Head chef Dan Smith serves simple local produce, perfectly cooked over a grill and rotisserie. Sunday lunch is good: Paddock Farm beef, Kelmscott pork and chicken from Adlington farm. There are lunchtime sandwiches and sharing platters in the evening. A good wine list and three local ales complete the picture.

Retire to your very own space with private gravel garden. You get a sitting room with comfy seating and a wood-burner, a cosy bedroom, bathroom with walk-in shower and a little kitchen should you want to cook, but easier to nip to the pub.

Reviews

Rescued from closure by the Lionhearth Group, who also own the Swan at Ascott-under-Wychwood, the Black Horse reopened its doors in September 2023. Seek out this stylishly reinvented village pub for classic pub dishes cooked well, the glorious Mediterranean-style summer terrace, and Salford Cottage, a cosy bolthole for two at the bottom of the garden – perfect for exploring the Cotswolds.
