The Experience

With a luminous expanse of watery views over the quayside you’ll feel immersed in a maritime world, and the theme continues inside: bright white walls, a neutral colour palette, a sense of calm. The cottage is part of a converted granary, spread over three floors with a double en suite on the ground and second floor and a light-filled living room and a neat kitchen in between.

Step outside to a smart harbour lively with cafés, a museum and a boat shed where local craftsmen are building a full-size replica of the Sutton Hoo burial ship. A little further are the medieval streets of Woodbridge leading to restaurants, pubs, a river walk meandering to the sea in one direction, and scenic country walks in the other.

Across the river you’ll glimpse Sutton Hoo’s dense woodland where there are acres to roam plus an exhibition centre and RSPB Minsmere is 22 miles. Take your coffee outside (you have your own little bistro table and chairs) for birdlife and bobbing boats.

Woodbridge is a delightful, green and increasingly fashionable destination in itself, with its riverside setting, its boats and old buildings. But it makes the perfect base to explore the magical Suffolk coastline with its dazzling charms of quaint pubs, remote villages, and romantic history of smugglers, invasions and cities lost to the sea.

Location

The neighbourhood

Pop next door to the country's last working tide mill, still milling flour after 850 years! Across the river is National Trust Sutton Hoo (15 min drive) with over 200 acres of grounds and heaps of information about the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site in a smart exhibition centre. Further afield is RSPB Minsmere, Snape Maltings for a rich cultural programme and Aldeburgh for the best fish and chips.

Local points of interest from Julie Reed

  • The River Walk & Tide Mill was voted the most loved element of Woodbridge by its residents with vistas across the river – maybe even spotting the local seal!
  • Book a table at The Crown at Woodbridge where head chef Ben Hegarty brings his unique style to the exciting menu which comprises local produce.
  • Frequent markets are held on the Market Hill in the shadow of the beautiful Shire Hall. Seasonal food markets, (look out for locally grown asparagus) vintage markets, craft markets and many more supplement the local shopping scene throughout the year.
  • National Trust Sutton Hoo is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, its story was recently retold in the Netflix film 'The Dig' starring Ralph Fiennes as archaeologist Basil Brown and Carey Mulligan as owner Edith Pretty.
  • Step on board Suffolk River Trips' Gina and explore the upper reaches of the beautiful River Deben. Departing from Woodbridge Town Steps you will enjoy a sailors view of Woodbridge, passing the historic site of Sutton Hoo en route.
  • Woodbridge has a history of rope-making, sail-making and boat-building and Sir Francis Drake had his fighting ships built at Woodbridge. Rendlesham Forest, close to RAF Woodbridge was the site of a supposed UFO sighting in 1980.
