The Experience
There’s plenty of space inside and an extra shed outside for the freezer, muddy boots or anything you don’t want to take into the living quarters. A wood-burning stove will keep you cosy in cooler months and you’ll feel happily cocooned in your holiday spot, perhaps with a book or watching a film on telly. When the sun shines there are lovely walks to be had, good cycling, or exploring Bury St Edmunds.
The kitchen is small but perfectly formed and you’ll find fresh eggs from the owners’ chickens, homemade biscuits, milk, sparkling water, a vase of glorious cut flowers from the garden in spring and summer, plus a bottle of whisky for that ‘just in case’ moment. Stay for a week and you’ll have loaf of bread from the local artisan bakery too. Your bed is large with a wrought iron base and there are coat hangers for your clothes.
Long summer evenings can be spent in the English country garden, all yours and very restful – perfect for a sundowner or a picnic.

The Red Shed provided a much-needed peaceful haven. You feel far away from everything there, and yet the Shed is a short drive away from Bury St. Edmund's with lots of lovely independent shops and restaurants. Inside it's really cozy, stylish and atmospheric, particularly with the log burner. We really appreciated all the extra finishing touches. We have done a few quirky countryside stays like this but this has been by far our favourite. We hope to be back in the future!

The Red Shed is a really wonderful place to stay. It is beautifully furnished and well equipped to an extremely high standard throughout. There is a separate shed to house bicycles if needed and a private garden filled with fragrant lavender. There are many thoughtful touches to appreciate from the personalised welcome plaque at the gate, many lavender bags, a complementary jar of honey and home baked shortbread biscuits. It is a quality home from home, we will definitely be back.

A lovely place to stay; clean, well equipped and welcoming. In the evenings we saw stars, heard owls and drank wine (not necessarily in that order). Tea-drinkers may find the water too hard without a filter, and there is no microwave in the kitchen - but these are minor points that did nothing to detract from the pleasure of our stay. Highly recommended.

The Red Shed is quite unique. Rebecca has created a tranquil oasis where one can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The Shed is equipped with everything you need and tastefully furnished and decorated. There are even phone chargers in the bathroom! Rebecca is a delightful host providing a few special treats like her own honey ,shortbread biscuits and a decanter of whiskey! I can thoroughly recommend The Red Shed and there is no doubt that we will be visiting it again.

The secluded and very peaceful location was immediately attractive to me, and the warm welcome would make me want to stay at The Red Shed, which feels very private. I do not think you would see the owners or hear them, unless you needed to.....privacy is the name of the game!! A truly lovely spot to spend a quiet weekend.

Location
The neighbourhood
Hawstead is a small village but there is easy access by road to Bury and the popular wedding venue The Suffolk Barn. The nearest pub is The White Horse at Whepstead, a friendly place serving decent pub food. Bury St Edmunds has a fine cathedral and markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, plus a farmers' market on the second Sunday of the month. There are shops and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Local points of interest from Rebecca Popham
- The Red Shed was built in the late 1940s and used as an artist studio for the son.. he still lives in the village. We converted and renovated it to live in whilst we modernised our existing next door home.
- National Trust Ickworth Park is 4 miles away, with is beautiful parkland, wood and river walks.
- Nowton Park with its maze and arboretum is 2 miles from us, it also hosts the Saturday Parkrun..
- The Friendly Loaf Artisan Bakery is 2 miles away selling a range of delicious breads and pastries., preorder and collect en route to The Red Shed.
- Beautiful village green where you can sometimes see a Barn owl hunting over the grassland during early evenings.
- Park Run every Saturday morning 2 miles away in beautiful Nowton Park.. next to The Friendly Loaf Bakery.

Introducing
Rebecca Popham
Rebecca and James live next door and have poured much love into the renovation of the shed. Rebecca's joy in life is stage setting, whether for her own guests or people staying in the Red Shed. She loves making everything look understated, but beautiful. They are there if you need them but otherwise will leave you to your own devices.
This was the perfect stay. First time away with my partner and we fell in love with all of it. The aesthetic is perfect right down to the little labels almost from Alice in Wonderland. The log burner, the kitchen, the bathroom.. wow! We will be staying again, it is a not so little shed which provided a perfect idyllic escape!
