The Experience

In the heart of attractive Midhurst, tucked above the owner’s lifestyle shop, is this gorgeous two-floor loft. The ancient beams and wonky walls of a 16th-century building have been transformed into an open-plan space with a calm, muted colour palette. Play board games in front of the electric wood-burner, plug into Netflix or Amazon, kickstart your day with a Nespresso in the smart kitchen where you’ll find basics for cooking and a bottle of Prosecco.

Open stairs lead to the master bedroom under the eaves: warmed by underfloor heating, it has a freestanding tub for bubbly soaks and a giant bed. Extra guests get the nifty sofa bed (two singles or a double) in a corner of the living room, and the smart bathroom is down here too.

There’s much on your doorstep: independent emporiums, delis and coffee shops; The Bricklayers Arms, serves good pub food if you don’t fancy cooking. Further afield there are gentle rambles on the South Downs, Cowdray Park Polo Club, Goodwood and Chichester.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're almost in the centre of town with interior and antique shops, a jewellers and a health food store on your street. A little further on are independent shops, pubs and cafes. For a slap-up meal try The Duke of Cumberland, three miles away. Take a gentle hike along part of the 65-mile Serpent Trail or visit Cowdray Park for tea rooms and to stock up on local produce.

Local points of interest from Karin Dunbar

  • Interested in gardens - then West Dean is a short distance away where you can explore a wide range of historic features on a gentle walk around the grounds. From surreal trees to the restored walled kitchen garden. They also run short art and craft courses.
  • Next to West Dean is The Weald & Downland Living Museum – a hidden gem in the South East, a museum for those who want to see, touch and even smell what life was really like for people living in years gone by - and where The Repair Shop is filmed.
  • Learn to make fresh cream truffles and chocolate bars with Midhurst's very own chocolatier Noble & Stace. This practical and fun Masterclass will last around 3 hours, the result: 20 dipped truffles, 3 solid chocolate bars and a bag of shards! For up to 4.
  • Have lunch or dinner at the Horseguards Inn in Tillington. You won't be disappointed.
  • The first Saturday of each month the Midhurst Farmers' Market takes place at the end of the road in Market Square. 9am - 2pm fresh bagels to olive oil.
  • On your doorstep is Cowdray Polo, Goodwood Racing (cars and horses), The Spread Eagle Spa for pampering (walking distance), glorious walks to Cowdray ruins and then lunch or coffee at the award winning Cowdray Farm Shop & Cafe.

Introducing

Karin Dunbar

Karin runs her lifestyle store, Stuff & Co, on the ground floor of the building where she sells her own soaps and toiletries (that you'll find in the loft, of course) as well as other lovely items that catch her eye. She designed and project-managed the renovation of the loft over two years and has filled it with beautiful things, many of which are available to buy in the shop.
