The Experience

It’s a delightful spot. The village is picture-perfect with a rushing brook, ancient bridge, spring flowers and manicured gardens. Just up the hill you’ll find Garden Cottage next to the owners’ house, but facing the other way so you’ll feel very private. Views from most windows are over the garden, a gorgeous space to loll on warm days, eating at the big table, listening to many birds, perhaps chatting to cows.

Inside is comfortable and cosy with a wood-burner (lots of logs supplied and more outside – it’s a generous place), books, games and smart TV for rainy days. The swish kitchen is spacious, with a large prepping island and table so you can cook, chop and chat convivially. You’ll find basics for cooking and a hamper of nice local things to start you off.

Borrow racquets for a game of tennis, delve down oodles of public footpaths, stock up at two farm shops nearby, light the firepit for dark skies, sleep deeply in rural peace.

We think you'll love

  • All the lovely walks – there are more footpaths than you can shake a walking stick at and all very attractive, especially through the valley along the brook
  • Watching busy woodpeckers, all the usual garden birds plus a few surprises like fat thrushes, herons, buzzards and pheasants hiding from the shoot
  • Having a sundowner in the garden on a summer evening looking over the valley

Reviews

Great location, very peaceful, exactly as described in the details. Would definitely stay here again if in the area. Highly recommended

Holly

Beautiful place to stay with fabulous views across the countryside. The hamper on arrival was a lovely touch. The house was perfect for us, was well equipped and the beds very comfortable. The garden was great for our 2 chocolate labs who enjoyed meeting the young cows and lovely walks in the wood and near by. Thank you all for looking after us so well .

Karen

What a location!! A beautiful cottage in a stunning setting. Beautiful decor, very comfortable and spacious and so clean! So peaceful with walks on the doorstep, a lovely garden and a well maintained tennis court. The very generous hamper on arrival was well received. So thoughtful! Such lovely toiletries too. We loved exploring the local area ... our favourite destination was Castle Combe. Jane is such a lovely host ... so welcoming, friendly and lovely to chat to. Harriet is an absolute delight. I cannot rate her management skills highly enough....We would not hesitate to book again.

Claire

Brilliant property in the most perfect spot. We had a wonderful stay and would certainly recommend to others and visit again. The hamper filled with lots a delicious things was such a nice touch too. Everything about this property was ideal. Super responsive and accommodated a slightly later check out which was very kind. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

Come for a surprisingly beautiful, hidden corner of the UK with views over a rolling valley towards the church on the other side. There's a pretty garden for summer eating and barbecues, a fire pit for warmth and a very comfortable cottage to retreat to if you get too cold. Light the wood-burner and watch a film, cook up a storm in the roomy kitchen, sleep in very comfortable, peaceful bedrooms.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very quiet in West Kington with its honey stone houses – you'll meet as many horses as you do cars. Walk 10 minutes up the road to the stud farm and say hello to the foals in spring. Take the footpath to Castle Combe (about 50 minutes) for two pubs. Burton farm shop and café is a half-hour walk for a hearty brunch or tea and cakes. The Old House at Home pub does a grand Sunday lunch.

Local points of interest from Leo Forster

  • The world famous fosseway runs alongside the village, with easy access for walkers and cyclists.
  • Tetbury, the second largest town in the Cotswolds is a short drive away and an area of natural beauty and home of King Charles and Queen Camilla . Boutique shops, great food and lovely to stroll around.
  • Castle Combe is a quintessential English village often named as the ‘prettiest village in England’ and has featured regularly as a film location, most recently in The Wolf Man, Stardust and Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse.
  • Westonbirt Arboretum is a short drive away and a fabulous day out for the family. Over 600 acres and 15,000 trees, one of the most important and diverse arboretums in the world.
  • Dyrham Park is famous for its world renowned gardens and deer park, designed by George London and Henry Wise and has also been used as a film location for Poldark. Lovely cafe!
  • Spend the day in the UNESCO world heritage city of Bath, including the Roman Baths, the Abbey, relax at the Bath Thermae Spa.

Introducing

Leo Forster

Leo looks after the bookings for Jane and her husband Richard - they live in the big house over the courtyard. Jane has a passion for interior design and is a very keen gardener. She also loves walking in this area with her dog and leaves you a really useful booklet about well-tested good walks in the area. If she's around during your stay she may pop in and say hello.
