Bustling market town, peaceful old cottage with river views and smart interior: funky lamps, a Shaker kitchen, roaring open fire, good beds

Read guest comments

Whichever way you come upon this bustling market town it's through classic Dales country: mighty hills and rolling pastures. Pop over the bridge and this handsome corner cottage stands before you – overlooking the river and its many waterfalls. Step in from the street and wind your way up through seemingly endless spaces. First off is the flagstoned hallway and dining room – keep your eyes peeled for quirky touches: funky lamps, vintage pottery and old signs. Up a few steps to the shaker-style kitchen – handmade, stone-floored and butler-sinked, with electric range and spotty crockery. Up again to the elegant, beamed sitting room. Stoke the fire from the heaving log basket, sink into a squishy sofa and tot up more river views. When finally you reach the top, flop on to your sleigh bed and take in the best waterfall views in the house. No TV up here, just a soothing sound system. Stroll to some great pubs and eating places, a good butcher and olde worlde general store. This is the home of Wallace's Wensleydale, so buy warm bread and a spot of cheese. Deep in the National Park, Hawes slumbers between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss on the Pennine Way. Dally awhile in deepest luxury.

"A delightfully cosy & yet luxurious cottage for 2 in the lovely town of Hawes. In the vicinity there is so much to encourage you to stay longer. There are several quality antique shops, cafes and pubs, traditional food & craft shops and some great walks in the surrounding hills. After all that effort you can simply retire to your enchanting Cottage with mod cons and tradition combined. A real treat for anyone who wants to escape into a bygone world if only for a few intoxicating days! Thanks to Karen (who provided some lovely local goodies for our arrival) the whole three days was a real joy. "

"Mill Fosse Cottage was a delight. Extremely cosy & comfortable; all the fixtures and fittings were top quality, and the kitchen very well equipped. The decoration was charming, lots of interesting artwork, but also quirky & fun. It was a nice touch that the mugs and many of the furnishings were made by local craftspeople, as were the tasty treats that welcomed us on arrival. Fantastic local walks and sights, but a snug fireside made us want to stay in by the fire on the chilly autumn evenings and listen to the roar of the river. "
