You are in the heart of Dylan Thomas country but your back garden will tempt you to stay home. Slip out of the door, across a stream and into 40 acres of woodland, criss-crossed with tracks, teeming with birds, flowers and wildlife, it’s one big adventure playground. There are seven swings (one on a tree rope), all made by Charlotte’s son, and mud kitchens for the little ones, a space for fires and outdoor cooking and the Robersons’ will take you for a spin around the woods to all the secret corners in their 4×4. Tired, dirty and happy children will reluctantly return to your solid, welcoming stone barn tucked in this quiet valley. Light-filled and open-plan, with underfloor heating and exposed beams, there’s a spacious well-equipped breakfasting-kitchen, and a large, wood-floored living room with French doors to a sun-trap patio; perfect for barbecues! Bedrooms are light and simply furnished; the pretty bathroom has a toasty slate floor. With heaps of children’s toys (all rotated and sanitised each week), eggs to collect from the family’s free-range chickens behind the house, you might never leave, though beaches, steam railway, gardens and castles are less than an hour. Unpretentious, outdoorsy fun.
