The Experience

Pantybeiliau is set high on a hillside above the village of Gilwern, historically a commercial staging post along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. A plateau above the house is criss-crossed with small railways and tramroads from earliest days of the Industrial Revolution and now grazed by sheep and wild horses.

Harry and Nicola live in the Victorian section of the house and leave you the spacious Georgian part, which includes a vast dining room where breakfast is served, a very comfortable sitting room with games, DVDs and music, and a study and a snug. The three bedrooms are all en-suite and have gorgeous views over the garden and valley.

The area has a well-deserved reputation for good food and your hosts will happily advise you of the best places to go. Circular walks from the door include the canal and the local pub. There’s caving, paragliding and all sorts of biking as well as churches and castles to explore.

Reviews

We have just returned home after a 3 night stay at Pantybeiliau House and cannot find enough superlatives to describe our time there. The hosts Nicola and Harry are marvellous; nothing is too much trouble and they are genuinely interested in their guests and obviously enjoy sharing their home with visitors. Our room was spacious and comfortable with an excellent en suite shower room. The whole house is full of interesting family history and furnished with lovely antiques but in a very relaxed, family/lived in style. We would certainly recommend a stay at this House and hope to return

Jinty, Sandbach

This really is a special place to stay. It is a beautiful house, furnished in country house style. The house has a faded grandeur which only adds to its appeal. The owner hosts are delightful and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay. Tea and coffee with fresh milk is available to make at any time and the breakfast is one of the best I have ever had. The fresh fruit platter was especially welcome and the ‘full English’ (sorry that should be ‘full Welsh’) was delicious. I thoroughly recommend this delightful B&B. You will not be disappointed.

Catherine, Cobham

"Plumb Perfect" "Bowled Over" "No Wrong 'Uns" This has to be the best B&B have ever stayed in. Perfect example of a B&B and what this very British form of hospitality is. The hosts in Harry and Nicola are, like their wonderful family home, the very best. Simply nothing to fault. Their hospitality & sporting pedigree let alone family history oozes from every room, ornament, little touch and welcome. A bit of a "googly" was thrown in the small hours when we were there, and of course, Harry and Nicola dealt with it, with a 'straight bat' Return already booked for 2024. Just had to.

Marcus, Cricklade

What a great place for a celebration or just go to recharge and reaffirm your faith in good people and the beauty of the landscape. Knockout hosts in a beautiful family home that is all at your disposal and delight. Ever attentive hosts, hot baths, roaring fires, comfy beds and delicious food after exploring the National Park and local pubs we could not have had a better experience in a five star hotel. This is a great B&B and a great Welsh holiday. Thank you so much

Charles, Worth Matravers

We absolutely loved our stay at Pantybeiliau House which is the most amazing B and B set in beautiful grounds in the Welsh countryside . We had a luxurious bedroom and bathroom with spectacular views of the Brecon National Park. Harry and Nicola were the perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome in their lovely home . They made our stay hugely enjoyable and their consideration and attention to detail was outstanding. Great place to relax and unwind - we will be back

Penny, Northampton

Nicola and Harry Lewis were wonderful hosts over New Year and provided us such a warm welcoming comfortable stay at their beautiful Georgian home 'Pantybeiliau'. Our room and bathroom were very clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed, coupled with strong wifi and bluetooth. Nothing was ever too much trouble including a delicious bespoke breakfast. We thoroughly recommend their home when visiting the Monmouthshire countryside which also has so much to offer. A five star stay.

Leslie, Newbury

Such a special place to stay with friends. And one small dog! We absolutely loved the area, the walking, the pubs but most of all coming back to tea and roaring fires and huge amounts of hot water!! The Lewis’s are the most generous hosts and nothing is a problem for them. All 3 of our rooms were So comfy and absolutely everything was top of the range. I believe it has all been renovated very recently with all the mod cons and all with en-suite bathrooms! We will be back. Huge thanks

Emma, Dorset

Beautiful home away from home. Harry & Nicola are a complete delight, we were made to feel so welcome & our every need was never a problem. Breakfast was certainly a highlight as well as the stunning bedrooms & lovely little details like the home grown flowers . Will absolutely be back

Freya, Glastonbury

Had a fantastic weekend here celebrating a birthday. Harry and Nicola went above and beyond to make it work for us. More like staying with friends, really welcoming, very comfortable but never over intrusive. Definitely be back!

Richard, Birmingham

We had the most wonderful time in the most beautiful of settings. We had such a warm welcome and were made to feel like it was our home. It was a privilege to stay in the Master 'Suite'. The room completely blew us away, and breakfast each morning was sensational. Particular highlight was the eggy bread and the homemade jams, made with freshly picked fruit from their wonderful garden. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. 2 nights wasn't enough but we can't wait to come back in the autumn. Thank you Harry & Nicola. It was the perfect weekend. Couldn't recommend highly enough

Oli, London

We had a brilliant weekend at Pantybeiliau. Such a beautiful house in an amazing setting. Harry and Nicola were perfect hosts - you're more like a house guest, lazing in the rooms and gardens, over the newspapers with a super breakfast, even joining them for drinks in the drawing room. A really special treat. We'll be back soon!

Sandy, London

We've had a fantastic weekend at Pantybeiliau House. Harry and Nicola are first class hosts and the house and garden are so beautiful. Additionally, Nicola's breakfast is absolutely delicious. We will go back there in a couple of months' time surely. Highly recommended!

Keiko, London

Thank you for the wonderful stay, Harry & Nicola! Never felt so welcome, everything so thoughtful and kind. Hope to come back again. Joyce. ps Good luck with your beautiful, beautiful place.

Joyce, The Netherlands

It's a house that gently strips visitors of their good intentions to be healthy and adventurous; and replaces them with idle and utterly enjoyable luxury, so that even leaving the garden becomes difficult to imagine.

Location

The neighbourhood

Gilwern is half a mile down the hill and has three pubs. A long (but flat) walk along the canal leads to the well-preserved Georgian town of Crickhowell (4 miles) for independent shops, delis and pubs, and the quaint market town of Abergavenny, known as the Gateway to Wales, also 4 miles away, is known for its foodie offering, home to good pubs, restaurants and cafés.

Local points of interest from Harry & Nicola Lewis

  • We're in the Brecon Beacons National Park & the perfect place to explore it from. Every outdoor activity imaginable available in some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere. Check out the Brecon Beacons website - or simply breathe out & walk from here.
  • Food & Drink - Gilwern itself has 3 pubs (& a wonderful Fish & Chips takeaway). Abergavenny is world famous for its annual food festival & consequently has many wonderful restaurants/pubs in the wider area. From Michelin-star to proper village pubs.
  • Visit The Big Pit (6 miles) - part of the World Heritage Site at Blaenavon. Be prepared to be lowered 300 feet down the mine shaft to the coal face. Visitors wear the same kit (helmets & lamps etc.) as the miners did. A truly unforgettable experience.
  • A long (but flat) walk of 4 miles from the front door along the canal (easier cycle & much easier drive!) sits Crickhowell which has been described as the perfect small town. A bustling high street entirely of independent local shops, delis & great pubs.
  • Should your visit need to encompass Cardiff, we are well within range by direct train (c 40 mins). It is a capital city well worth exploring: magnificent public buildings, famous little retail arcades & a fantastic castle. Edinburgh eat your heart out!
  • If castles are your thing, Wales has loads of them & many within very easy range. Some are brilliantly preserved ruins. Each has a fascinating history. Always a long & hard fight but with sieges the defenders normally lost - & very violently - in the end!

Introducing

Harry & Nicola Lewis

Harry and Nicola moved to Pantybeiliau in 2001 and it has been their family home ever since. Harry has hospitality in his blood and previously part-owned and operated five boutique hotels in the Marches. Sport is also a big theme in the family - Nicola was a successful three-day eventer and competed at Badminton and Burghley. Her father was Peter May, one of the English cricketing greats, and her grandfather and great uncle all captained England too.
