The Experience

B&B guests get the North Wing, the owners and their two dogs live in the rest, so the feel is spacious (only 4 bedrooms are let at one time) with high ceilings, sash windows and a memorable collection of pictures, objects, antiques, books and sculptures. Roam freely around a library, music room, dining room or morning room, settle with a book anywhere or take a picnic and head down the garden to the river.

Bedrooms (two larger with sitting areas, two slightly smaller) have their own bathrooms, some luxurious, others functional but spotless. Breakfast can be taken on your own or at one large table; warm croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches, toast, Danish pastries, charcuterie and cheese. There are two places to eat within walking distance for lunch or supper.

In summer you can play croquet on the lawn, or find a quiet place in the garden to sit, set off to the coast for all day hikes or to find a superb beach.

Reviews

A fantastic stay in a beautiful hotel with two wonderful hosts who couldn’t do enough for us. We only stayed 2 nights but could have stayed much longer. Gorgeous decor and grandeur and friendly and interesting hosts made for a great stay. The breakfast was astounding. Thanks again Chris and Nicky

Nick, Evenjobb

Location

The neighbourhood

You can walk to a pub, The Seven Stars, or Flambards Hotel and Tea Rooms. Cardigan is 9 minutes by car - a lovely bustling town on the edge of the river Teifi, with a castle, two theatres and lots of independent shops. Spot dolphins and seals on a boat trip, watch birds at Cilgerran Wildlife Centre. Eat at Pizzatipi, a huge outdoor venue, or Bara Menyn with fresh cakes, doughnuts and bread.

Local points of interest from Chris & Nicky Mason-Watts

  • A magical house in a wonderful river-side setting with abundant walks, left out of the front door and downriver to Cilgerran Castle or upriver to Cenarth Falls, both painted by J M W Turner
  • Beaches, castles and the Pembrokeshire coastal path within a few minutes' drive
  • Full size croquet lawn in the garden at the former home of Miss Lily Gower, a four-time winner of the Women's Championship, and one of three women who have won the Open Championship
  • No alcohol licence but guests are permitted (indeed, encouraged) to bring their own, with a guests' fridge available to chill that champagne or Chablis
  • Numbers of guests are always restricted to preserve the special ambience, with no more than eight at any one time
  • Art-lovers, vintage car enthusiasts, opera afficionados and bibliophiles especially welcome
