The Experience

A group of attractive stone buildings have been carefully restored and modernised into a delightful place, just perfect for multi-generational families (there’s a separate bedroom in the garden), centred around a courtyard with a pool to splash in. Meander past the veg and herb patch, orchard and meadow to admire the valley from the viewing bench.

Inside it’s bright and airy: read a book or sip a nightcap in front of the huge wood-burner in the lofty-beamed sitting room. Whip up feasts in the big galley kitchen, it’s stocked with everything an enthusiastic cook needs – you arrive to a couple of bottles of rosé chilling in the fridge. The impressive dining room is just waiting to host convivial gatherings.

There are trails from the door (ask the owners for tips) to other hilltop towns and pretty churches. Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, winner of the prestigious ‘most beautiful town’ award, is 20 mins, vineyards and foodie markets abound.

Reviews

Loups d'Or was a wonderful, luxurious gite and met our needs very well. It was a comfortable, elegant property with a well stocked kitchen in terms of having everything you needed. The views are totally fabulous with the grounds perfect for a BBQ and a game of boules! Last but very much not least was the hospitality shown by Pimm and Marcel. They gave us a great welcome to their gite, were very on hand for any of our queries going well above and beyond excellent hosting skills. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. I highly recommend a stay at Loups d'Or!

I had the pleasure of staying at Pimm's and Marcel's wonderful getaway and it was just brilliant. Coming myself from the hospitality industry and seeing many hotel accommodations myself, I can give this place only an 11 out of 10. Everything is well thought through, nothing was missing, and all the provided facilities were perfectly functioning. P&M were such great hosts who provided a serene sense of hospitality either with their recommendations, a chit chat in the garden or by respecting the guest's privacy.

We already stayed at this wonderful gîte - LOUPS D'OR - the second time in 12 months. We really appreciate the hospitality of Pimm and Marcel and the great tips and information they gave us to make our stay a memorable one. We fell in love with this gîte and this beautiful landscape. We love to go hiking and especially enjoyed doing our great walks every day. We also managed a trip to the beautiful town of Périgueux this time, on a busy market day. A special recommendation. I can wholeheartedly and warmly recommend Loups d'Or! We are already planning our next trip there.

We spent 4 wonderful days at Loups d'Or. Wonderful because the romantic resort leaves nothing to be desired. Pimm & Marcel are great hosts, happy to help with any questions you may have. There are also plenty of things for children to do, & the neighbour's donkey is always happy when you visit him. Embedded in the unspoilt nature of the surroundings, far away from mass tourism, you will find plenty of time to relax. There is a lot to see in the vicinity: lovely villages, the charming nearby towns of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Brantôme, and Ribérac's famous Friday market. We will definitely back!

I love the sun-drenched sleepiness of this area, which makes it a wonderful place to unwind. If you wish to pull yourself from the lovely courtyard at the heart of this hilltop hamlet house you can explore the tiny streets of exquisite Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, play a round of golf, walk through the countryside or take a day course in throwing pottery.

Location

The neighbourhood

Lusignac village (15-min stroll) has a café and restaurant, for supplies go to Saint-Séverin or Verteillac, both a 10-min drive. The area is superb for walkers and cyclists with plenty of excellent routes. There's golf and horse riding nearby and the rivers Dronne and Lizonne for swimming and other watery fun. Stock up on local produce at foodie markets, try Ribérac (15km) or Brantôme (35km).

Local points of interest from Pimm & Marcel van der Donk

  • Whether you fancy walking, horse riding, tennis, golf, cycling or water sports - after a day of exercising, we can arrange a massage in your own room at Loups d’Or.
  • Foraging and navigation. Naturalist Tom Langham is the perfect guy for foraging, he organises guided walks, teaching primitive skills like fire lighting, navigation using tree leaves, tree roots, shade leaves and sun leaves.
  • Throughout the year, there are great markets in Périgueux, Brantôme, Saint Astier and Ribérac - and many more to explore near the village.
  • Take a drive to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and visit one of the ‘Most beautiful villages in France’. The subterranean monolithic church of Saint-Jean, is the tallest subterranean church in Europe. Roam the narrow streets with ceramists and potters.
  • There is a generous list of restaurants to pick from, but we also work with two excellent private chefs who can cook for you at Loups d'Or, Martina or Vincent.
  • Many vineyard tours are offered in Bergerac and Cognac. Wine tastings can be organised at Loups d’Or or a selection box can be delivered.
