The Experience

You’ll feel uplifted by all the nature surrounding you at this ‘house in the hill’: stroll in the pretty gardens, hike in the woodland or relax on your own shaded terrace with outdoor chairs facing the mountain. Attached to the owner’s home but with a private entrance, yours is the only guest room so expect complete peace and quiet.

Inside, your room is bright and homely with space for a table and chairs, a small fridge, and the means to make tea and coffee. A continental breakfast of fresh bread, pastries, yogurt and fruit juice is served on the terrace or delivered to your room in a basket.

It’s a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk to the Basque village of Espelette, famous for its red peppers and annual pepper festival ‘la Fête du Piment’ and buzzy with independent shops and eateries, including a Michelin star restaurant, Choko Ona. The spa town of Cambo-les-Bains is a 10-minute drive; Itxassou is 15 mins.

Location

The neighbourhood

As well as all the gorgeous Basque towns and villages for you to explore, all prettier than the last and all renowned for a particular food – don't miss Itxassou's cherry orchards, you've also got the coast a 30-minute drive away. Head to glitzy Biarritz or the more authentic Bayonne. It’s an easy hop over the border to Spain.

Local points of interest from Brigitte Gourlat

  • A very rural and peaceful setting, but just steps away from the village of Espelette
  • Cambo-les-Bains, a spa town, is 7 minutes away
  • We’re very close to the GR 10 hiking trail, and there are many other walking routes to discover
  • The most beautiful Basque villages can all be reached within 15–20 minutes
  • You can get to golf courses and the coast in less than 30 minutes

Introducing

Brigitte Gourlat

Brigitte and her husband, both smiley and welcoming, divide their time between Bordeaux and their house in Espelette. They know both areas very well and one of them is always on hand to help and advise if you need it.
