The Experience

Through ancient woods and unspoilt farmland you wind your way up to little Montestrucq, to a farm half a mile from the church, steeped in ancient character. Now, in the former bergerie, are sheepskin-strewn sofas, standing timbers, a huge open fire and, upstairs, bedrooms charming and cosy… Irish bed linen, pure wool carpets, Italian walk-in showers. Cassoulets, piperades, fondues, wild boar: Didier loves his ‘cuisine gourmande’, sources with gusto and has his own on site restaurant, La Bistronomie de l’Auberge; Sabine is full of smiles. The house faces south, the heated pool is inviting with a sauna too, and views soar over the hills to the majestic Pyrénées.

Reviews

La Bergerie was a welcome break on our way to the south of France from Spain. Sabine and Didier could not have been more welcoming. Simple rooms, spotlessly clean and with crisp linen sheets. A beautiful pool to cool off in, far reaching views and absolute quiet, a wonderful way to start our holiday. And Didier's expertise in the kitchen was a delight, making the most of fresh, local seasonal ingredients, hearty breakfasts and delicious dinners, the venison fondu with tasty homemade sauces was a huge hit with all the family. Our only want was a fan since our room in the eaves was painfully hot

We had such a wonderful time at Didier and Sabine's charming bergerie. Everything was perfect : the local cuisine, the beds, the pool, the view, the service. Don't think about twice!

We loved our stay with Didier and Sabine at La Bergerie. We were only there for one night, but could have stayed for days. The house and setting are beautiful, the hosts are charming and welcoming, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner, prepared by Didier, of homemade local and organic food. It was the best meal of our whole trip! We would love to come back in warmer weather when we could enjoy the pool.

Delightful, charming, very warm hosts, lovely meal in good company - it started at 8.45 and finished at 11.45. Good pool. Would love to go again.

Wonderful setting on brow of hill looking south-west across a valley and to the Pyrenees. Delightful property. Sabine is a delightful hostess who speaks French comprehensibly to Anglophones. Didier is a serious chef and cellar manager.

We have just spent a delightful night in a beautiful place with charming hosts. Would totally recommend a stay here. One of Sawdays best finds

A really superb stay. Wonderful room with excellent views over great countryside with the Pyrenees on the skyline. Sabine and Didier were superb hosts, Didier being and excellent chef with great food. Helpful information on local places of interest of which were all worth while. Relaxing swimming pool and local walks with lots of wildlife, who could wish for more. A little tricky to find but otherwise brilliant!

This was our second stay at La Bergerie. It was great to see Didier, Sabine and Dickie again. The farmhouse is beautiful, very french and authentic, the food is wonderful. Didier is a wonderful chef and host, we enjoyed a few meals and plenty of bottles of wine during our stay. The room and bathroom we stayed in were beautiful and spotless! We can't wait to return and enjoy the lovely gardens and pool. See you soon!

A lovely place, quiet and calm, with comfortable rooms and really excellent food. Sabine and Didier are lovely hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. Outside there are wonderful views over rolling wooded farmland - and a swimming pool to enjoy too. We came for a couple of nights and did not leave the house once, it was such a good place to relax. Didier takes his food seriously - cures his own ham and makes his own charcuterie - and keeps a decent cellar too. Pale carpets upstairs mean you have to take your shoes off before getting to your room. No credit cards, so take cash.

My husband and I booked a five night break at La Bergerie and visited in September. We had a wonderful stay and Didier and Sabine (and Dickie) were such wonderful hosts. We were thoroughly looked after, and were welcomed into their home. I would highly recommend La Bergerie for families, couples and groups looking to explore a beautiful part of France, and parts of Northern Spain. The house is stunning in all aspects, as is the food if you choose to dine in the evening. We did twice and had an amazing feast made from local produce, with fantastic wine. We certainly can't wait to visit again.

This place is worth a journey! We stayed three nights with our delightful and warmly friendly hosts Sabine and Didier (not forgetting Dicky!) Didier does the cooking and cares greatly about the quality and provenance of his ingredients, many being local and organic. His home-cured ham is a winner, and that cappuccino of crème de cèpes... wow! Dinner is an event not to be missed. The house and surroundings are restful, and the guest accommodation is of excellent quality. Special place? You bet!

Tony, Nottingham

Fantastic place and amazing food! Very nice welcome from the owners and a very tasty complementary aperitif! The food is really nice and smartly presented. The room is clean and it has a lovely walking shower. The view from the place is fantastic and the swimming poole is suitable for children.. We stayed three nights , my husband, myself and my two-year old baby. We totally enjoyed our stay!

Melinda, Sicily

We highly recommend La Bergerie and the hospitality of Didier and Sabine (and Dici!). What a beautiful and peaceful setting. It felt like we had just gone to visit friends in their home and we were made to feel so welcome. We will DEFINITELY be returning to see our new friends again as soon as we possibly can!

Matt, Eastbourne

A great chambre d'hote of excellent quality situated in an exeptionally beautiful landscape of rolling hills and a view of the Pyrenees. The excellence of the site is matched by the warm and friendly reception of the hosts and their cuisine is also in itself worth the trip!

La Bergerie offers the true French 'en famille' experience. We were made to feel at home and part of the family, with the house and garden ours to freely enjoy. Dinner was the real French gourmand experience, all made at home or locally, and delicious. We had great evenings 'a table', with conversation flowing and it felt like a night in with friends. Breakfast was equally copious, setting us up for the day. Location is fab too, with the Pyrenees visible in the near distance. Didier and Sabine are the perfect hosts, and 'super sympa', with a natural affinity in people. We will be back...

Tessa

Two years on we have very fond memories of our stay in La Bergerie. Such a warm welcome from Didier and Sabine in their wonderful home in the countryside, conveniently located close to the Pyrenees and also for day trips to the coast. Delicious food and great conversation despite some language barriers (!) Didier is a character and took us on his weekly shopping trip to his suppliers, cheese makers, vineyards, buying trout. The location of La Bergerie the perfect place to unwind, great views from the terrace and refreshing dips in the pool. We hope to visit again! Lucy, Luis & Inés
