The Experience
As well as your own outside space there’s a gate into Château de la Varenne’s glorious gardens. Stroll at your leisure through 20 hectares of formal gardens and parkland. Sit in quiet contemplation on a bench near the River Saulx as it meanders through the grounds, knock a ball around the tennis court, let the kids tire themselves out on the swings.
Inside the cottage is elegantly refined. The ground floor ensuite bedroom opens to the terrace; upstairs to another double ensuite, and a double and twin sharing a bathroom. Every room is light and spacious, inviting you to unbend. You eat in the relaxed kitchen, in the formal dining room in front of the great stone hearth, or barbecue outside.
Walk to the café in Haironville or nip to Renaissance town Bar-le-Duc (12km) for shops and a thrice weekly market selling everything (top tip: arrive early), visit gothic Saint-Étienne church and try the local delicacy – redcurrant jam.

I can imagine a tranquil break here wandering the grounds of the chateau and getting lost in the pages of your favourite Jane Austen novel then dinner in front of a roaring fire.

Introducing
Marie-Caroline Duburch-Petin
The Duburch-Petin family, who live in Paris most of the time, have owned the Château for six generations. They've recently refurbished the cottage for guest use and have included lots of useful things for a family holiday: books, games, DVDs. Local woman, Rachelle, greets guests and is on hand if you need her, otherwise you look after yourselves.
La Petite Varenne is a lovely house and a wonderful tranquil place to relax. We stayed for a week in August with our three children. The house has been beautifully renovated and is extremely comfortable. All the bedrooms are light and airy; the linen and towels are lovely quality. We enjoyed walking through the Chateau’s peaceful grounds and having barbecues on the terrace in the evening. In the huge private garden, there are swings for younger children. Lac Du Der is only a 35 minute drive away and we took the opportunity to go to Paris for the day by TGV. I recommend La Petite Varenne.
