The Experience

Pluck figs from the trees, splash in the pool, linger at sunset and enjoy the view, of rolling grassland, woods and trees and, in the distance, Blonde d’Aquitaine cows. The scene is reminiscent of an 18th-century painting.

Down a tiny lane in Armagnac country, this traditional Gersoise farmhouse is five minutes from little Estang, blessed with l’Hôtel Restaurant Du Commerce for authentic Gers cuisine, and a fabulous boulangerie-cum-pâtisserie. For cafés, shops and a medieval colonnaded square, head for Labastide d’Armagnac (20km). For weekly inspiration: the market at Éauze.

Back home, a charming country simplicity prevails – beamed walls, old terracotta floors, a hearth with a wood-burner, and bedrooms upstairs and down. Outside, a big covered terrace links the house with the barn…a wow of a living space with a vast kitchen, a great round table, and cosy sofas in a corner for TV and films.

Reviews

I'd love to stay here! I simply adore the peace, the simple originality of the house and furnishings. For anyone wanting peace where they can wind down, chill, or be creative, this is it!

Amanda, Sawday's Inspector

We had the most wonderful stay at Arblade discovering this beautiful part of France - an area we didn't know. Your home is such a peaceful and relaxing place. The local markets had delicious produce and the brebis cheese with your homemade chutney was utterly delicious. We certainly made the most of eating out on the terrace overlooking the uninterrupted views. The children loved the pool and on the one morning it rained we had plenty to occupy them, the lovely old fashioned jigsaws, board games and endless DVDS! Thank you Sarah for lending us your beautiful home

I have spent several holidays in Arblade (May and June) and highly recommend this spacious country house located in a quiet hamlet, with easy acces to several pretty rural villages, antique shops and fabulous food markets. The house is well equipped with a great kitchen and confortable lounge area. There are two covered terraces to provide shade in the heat, a good sized swimming pool and the surrounding grounds make it an ideal place to chill out with friends and family in the beautiful and authentic Gascony countryside.

We had the most heavenly week here - perfect weather, wonderful pool and spectacular sunsets! The house is absolutely charming, with masses of space both inside and out, and a lovely terrace for al fresco dining and sundowners! We enjoyed exploring the local area and buying lovely fresh produce at the market, then coming back to the amazing kitchen to cook. A brilliant holiday, thank you so much - we’ll definitely be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

Arblade lies at the end of a tiny lane, yet is only 5km from Estang (with a café, boulangerie, restaurant, pizzeria, deli, organic shop, and old bullring). Bastide villages, markets and wine tastings abound: don't miss those at Le Monastère de Saint-Mont, a Cave Co-operative a 30-minute drive. Only 15 mins away is Lac de L'Uby, a water park with a beach, a forest, bicycles and paddle boards.

Local points of interest from Sarah Roberts

  • We are in the very heart of Armagnac country. La Bastide d'Armagnac is 20 minutes with its' 12th Century Square, colonnade and outstanding Armagnac distillery. Plenty of Armagnac tastings to be had in Bas Armagnac!
  • Biarritz - 1.5 hours to the Atlantic coastal town for sea, beach, surfing, and perhaps roulette. Fabulous café's and shops overlooking the wonderful seafront.
  • Lac de L'Uby is a lake and water park 15 minutes away with a beach, forests, bicycles and paddle boarding, perfect to keep active children occupied.
  • For keen cyclists the nearby chapel and museum of Notre Dame des Cyclistes, cycle there and onto La Bastide d'Armagnac for a tipple and refreshment.
  • The beautiful town of Pau set in the foothills of the Pyrenees with its' boulevards, shops, café's and fabulous restaurants. For history & art lovers visit the Château, birthplace to Henry IV of France & Museum of Fine Arts for Degas's, The Cotton Exchange
  • Formula One fans must visit Nogaro (15 mins away) where you can hire racing cars for the day to drive around the track!

Introducing

Sarah Roberts

20 years ago Sarah and her husband fell in love with Arblade, with the gentle pace of life, and with this timeless part of France. They brought up their family here, and loved to take in guests. An excellent cook - note the kitchen - she writes: "for the foodie, there's unlimited access to the freshest of ingredients and local produce." She now lives in Dorset with her two daughters and runs her own supper clubs, leaving an excellent team to care for Arblade.
