The Experience

To enter Gourdon is intriguing and exciting. The B&B stands at the top of one of the southern France’s ‘villages perchés’… on a clear day you can see for miles. Imagine slipping out of the door and strolling down through the narrow lanes of the lovely old houses to pick a restaurant for lunch or dinner.

The core of the house is a spiral wood staircase in a 12th-century tower. From the splendid breakfast salon on the ground floor, you ascend to the small ensuite on the first floor, the double with its huge bedroom and the owners’ bedroom. Books and pictures abound, right up to the top landing. Take your pick and find a reading spot in the garden. Peace reigns, apart from the cooing pigeons and the booming bells of Saint Pierre.

Historic towns are temptingly close: Souillac with its Friday market (foie gras, flowers, beignets cooked on the spot), foodie capital Sarlat, and the stunning rampart town of Domme.

Reviews

Staying at Valentines is like staying in a cultivated, warm, and friendly family home - because it is. Alan and Rosemary, expat Brits, have created a little oasis in what feels to me like the as-yet-undiscovered town of Gourdon. And I truly enjoyed my stay there. Two comfortable guest rooms, a terrace for meals (prepared by Alan and Rosemary), and a small pool for an after-dinner dip are among the pleasures that await. Around the town of Gourdon are several interesting things to see, including Josephine Baker's chateau and Osip Zadkine's artist's studio and museum. A wonderful place.

Amy, Iowa

Valentines is situated in the centre of Gourdon, a delightful and typical French hillfort town. While most, if not all, of the buildings date back centuries the house, on the other hand, has been carefully refurbished retaining many of the original features but with smart new bathrooms, kitchen and cool areas out of the sun where you can relax: a feeling of being apart but in the centre of things. Our hosts, Rosemary and Alan, were wonderfully helpful and on hand when needed.

Day, London

A wonderfully welcoming and atmospheric property in the mediaeval heart of Gourdon minutes from restaurants, shops and the ruined panoramic castle. Rosemary and Alan were immensely thoughtful hosts giving great guidance on the (many) local sights.

Tony, Brighton

Valentines is stylish, comfortable, well equipped and brilliantly located in the heart of the historic and friendly town of Gourdon.Everything needed to immerse yourself in true french culture is within a few minutes walk of the property. Saturday Market - bountiful in fresh local produce. Short drive away is the village of Les Arques where the artist Zadkine had a house and studio. Gourdon has a railway station where it is possible to catch trains to Toulouse and Paris - a bonus for any traveller. Rosemary and Alan, were attentive without being intrusive - lovely people - perfect hosts.

Edel, Inverness

Plan more than one night in this cosy house in the centre of historic Gourdon - there's so much to see and do. Your hosts are very engaging and knowledgeable and there is a sense of secrecy in being tucked away in the heart of the town, apparently distant from the bustle of modern life yet in reality just 2 minutes away from restaurants and shops.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house sits just below the church that crowns this ancient town, overlooking a roofscape of descending houses simple and grand. What were the battlements is now the little 'péripherique' designed to enable cars to avoid the maze of tiny streets. Here lie most of the shops and restaurants: try Hostellerie de la Bouriane; Le Pot Occitan; Vin'oh, a great little wine bar that does small platters.

Local points of interest from Alan Ravenscroft & Rosemary Stones

  • A must see is Le Gouffre de Padirac (26 Miles). The largest underground natural heritage site in France. A lift takes you deep into the chasm for a flat bottom boat journey along a river through some of the 22km of tunnels so far discovered. Spectacular.
  • Rocamadour (18 miles) is one of the most extraordinary sites in France, this sanctuary and famous place of pilgrimage clings dramatically to the rock face 150m above the Alzou Canyon. Henry Plantagenet of England came here in search of a miraculous cure.
  • Sarlat la Canéda (16 miles) is a pretty historic town with narrow medieval streets and handsome Gothic and Renaissance houses. It was rebuilt when Charles Vll bestowed privileges upon Sarlat to thank its population for their resistance against the English.
  • Les Arques (15 miles) Sculptor Ossip Zadkine and his artist wife fell in love with this charming village and bought a house there. Musée Zadkine is full of their bronzes, tapestries and wood sculptures. There is also a very good restaurant, La Récréation.
  • The extraordinary Grottes Préhistorique de Cougnac (2 miles) are notable for their remarkable prehistoric paintings (mammoth, long horned deer, human figures) and exquisite formations of stalactites and stalagmites. One of our favourites. Guided tours.
  • Le Chateau de Fénelon (11 miles) is the real thing! A 14th century fortified castle with three layers of fortified walls. Beautiful situation and views. Privately owned but open to the public. Interior rooms furnished with Renaissance pieces. 248.

Introducing

Alan Ravenscroft & Rosemary Stones

Rosemary is a retired children's book publisher; Alan is a TV producer who made programmes on "everything bar sport". He's published too. The couple lived in Burgundy for 20 years, and once featured in the TV series 'A House in France'. A few years ago they made the move to the Lot, and fell in love with Gourdon and the house. Why 'Valentines'? They bought their new home on February 14th.
