The Experience
The house is furnished with great taste: antique rugs on flagstone floors, gorgeous curtain fabrics, exposed beams, lovingly worn furniture, limestone walls and an impressive solid stone staircase. It’s been in the family for over twenty years and the furniture and artwork have been thoughtfully collected over that time.
Two living rooms downstairs have cosy seating and open fires, there’s a full-size antique billiard table in the adjoining ‘Great Hall’ and a good collection of films on DVD. Mostly you’ll be out in the garden discovering a beautiful shell house, eating al fresco by the brick-built barbecue and playing boules on the lawn. The surroundings are bucolic.
Cycle to the village (half a mile) for your morning croissants, walk, explore rural Normandy – the wonderful markets and wild beaches.

Very beautiful and grand manor house with lovely stone features (fireplaces, staircase etc). Great games room for Snooker, film and ping-pong. Mature gardens with room to wander in the grounds and orchard. Close to beaches and local villages and the local farmers market. Rooms all have luxurious old comfortable character.

I spent a few delightful days at La Chevalerie, a perfect mix of luxury and home comfort. There was quite a few of us gathered for the weekend, but the size and lay out of the house and its grounds proved to be perfectly suited for great communal moments as well as calm and privacy. Day trips to the numerous nearby beaches were a treat too.

La Chevalerie is a beautifully-appointed house. A perfect base to explore nearby beaches and towns, but also gorgeous to spend lazy days at. We've been visiting for a number of summers, always with a few families with kids of all ages catered to. The games room is vast, cooking in the enormous kitchen is fun, dining outside on the terrace over long lunches and dinners is magical, indoor and outdoor fires are cosy, the bedrooms are all beautiful and spacious. Very relaxing and quiet countryside.

A wonderfully characterful large house with all the space and relaxed atmosphere you need for a proper holiday with friends or family. Some really lovely architectural features and decorative touches and a huge garden and long drive give the place a real glamour without it being over bearing or fussy in any way. This is a house to cook, eat, dance, and laugh in - in the most relaxed way.

Spent a divine week holidaying at this château. Loved the interiors!! Very Elle decor, superbly curated in a country French manor. Comfortable and chic! The kitchen is perfect for social gatherings. Fabulous location for exploring medieval tows and markets .It was gloriously quiet for sleepy lie ins /the games room and sound system is epic for fun social afternoons and evenings. Quintessentially Normandy château. My kids loved it and the dog was happy out too

Location
The neighbourhood
Picauville is in the Regional Park of the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. Sainte-Mère-Église – the first French town to be liberated after the war - is a 10-minute drive for restaurants, bars, a micro-brewery and the Airborne Museum. The Saturday market at St Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is an absolute delight. You can join many moving D-Day tours as well as visiting the American Cemetery.
Local points of interest from Jane D'Albiac
- Summer markets on every day of the week in different market towns - favourites are Portbail, textiles, seafood, clothes and jewellery, Briquebec and Saint Vaast La Hougue
- Voted one of the top ten beaches in Europe, "La place de la vielle Eglise" near Carteret is a 35 minute drive away, boasts wide open space, good for surfing, family picnics and getting away from it all.
- D Day History is everywhere - you can do a Tank Tour of the Battles fought at Utah Beach, audio tour of the area around Saint Mere Eglise, the first town to be liberated on D Day and visit the world famous museums and American Cemetery at Omaha Beach.
- Cider and Calvados tours available in the heart of Calvados country
- Good restaurants nearby, serving up traditional cooking at reasonable prices - meat cooked on an open fire and more seafood cuisine at Carteret, Le Russel and La Potiniere centrally located on the beach.
- The German Cemetery, located just off the motorway before you get to the American Cemetery at Omaha

Introducing
Jane D'Albiac
Jane and Nicky live in London. She is a therapist, he is an independent film director. Jane's parents bought and restored the property over 20 years ago. Her father was the son of Air Marshal Sir John D'Albiac DSO, a famous First World War air force pilot and eminent senior commander during the Second World War. You'll see photographs of him in the house.
A perfect place for a laid-back break with family and friends. We loved the manor's homely, historic charm and the tranquil setting.
