The Experience

Philippe’s 19th-century townhouse is set on a residential street between the bank of the river Clain – one of two rivers upon whose confluence the Romans founded a settlement in 51 BC – and tall ochre cliffs housing cave dwellings and cellars dating from the Middle Ages.

Tuck into breakfast in a fabulous garden filled with lush greenery, edible flowers and an organic kitchen garden supplying fresh fruit; everything else is either homemade or locally-sourced (breads, homemade pastries, jams, yogurt and cheese); the eggs (scrambled or omelette) come from the hens.

Cross the road to have dinner at a lovely restored mill, or else the city centre of Poitiers is a 15-minute walk away. Ask Philippe about days out exploring the local culture, from woodblock printing lessons to music and history tours. Taste wine in the Haut-Poitou, 15 minutes north of the city, or the châteaux and wines of the Loire Valley are just over an hour’s drive.

Reviews

An absolutely brilliantly situated B&B for those who have always wanted to stop over to spend some time to discover historic Poitiers. This magical riverside quarter feels very village-like and far from the city centre, even though it is very close. The owners are adorable foodies and history buffs, with a fabulous garden and a passion for edible flowers.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is in a peaceful setting but in a matter of minutes you can cross the river to Poitiers, with its ancient and highly-decorated Byzantine churches, cathedral, museums, cafés, market, restaurants and shops. Families should not miss Futuroscope theme park, which always has new events and rides. The countryside around Poitiers is beautiful, and great walks can be had in every direction.

Local points of interest from Philippe Mangin

  • From our B&B (10 min on foot): Notre Dame Church. A jewel of the Romanesque art! It's meticulously carved facade illustrates the page of the Bible. Inside, the pillars decorated with coloured geometric patterns are really striking. A must see!
  • Fly like a bird at the Futuroscope park. With the « Extraordinaire Voyage » elected Best Attraction in Europe, you embark on a journey around the world. On board a flying machine, passengers feel lighter than air. A poetic and immersive experience.
  • Sainte Croix Museum: from the first human representation to the twelve sculptures by Camille Claudel, the most permanent collection in Poitou-Charentes never stop dazzling visitors. Philippe offers you an entrance ticket.
  • Before dinner or after breakfast, discover with Philippe a 18th troglodyte site, containing a house, its outhouses, and a large quarry. It was lived in from 1750 to 1790. Open your eyes and ears and delve into a piece of Poitiers.
  • Let your curiosity grow! During your stay, Philippe offers a guided tours of his naturally grown garden. You will discover perennial vegetables, edible flowers, and herbs. So, no surprises when it comes to mealtimes!
  • Quite an art! Poitevin artisans possess an unparalleled know-how. Life is full swing in their work-shop-boutiques. Feel free to go in and admire their expert skill. Philippe will recommend some of them: La Fabrique de parapluie, Aux bois gravés etc.
