The Experience

In a village near fabulous Fontainebleau is a large wooden gateway in a high stone wall, with a cottage behind and five acres of grounds – quelle surprise! It was home to a couple for 40 years: she the aunt of the owner of a nearby châteaux, he a Russian…hence the wonderful, whimsical collection of art. The two buildings are separated by a yard but you can take them both together.

In the main house the vast salon opens to a courtyard and a garden with immaculate topiaries and towering trees. Take a rug to the tufty grass, or swim a long lap in the pool. Both kitchens are convivial and welcoming and you’re left a bottle of their branded olive oil. The cottage has a walled garden, a terrace for outdoor meals and a lawn with loungers. Play pingpong here, or have a barbecue.

Walk and cycle from the house, have days out visiting villages and markets, ride horses through the nearby forest, take a tour of Jean Cocteau’s gaff.

Reviews

The Domaine de la Marcotte feels like the ideal place for a restful break. Enjoy the gardens, try the local hikes, or hop in the car to go on a culture trip to Barbizon or the nearby châteaux. Inside both properties you will find comfort and personality which will make you feel at home. Another Pierres d'Histoire's renovation success. Enjoy!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house and cottage are in a quiet village, Saint-Martin-en-Bière, but you're less than an hour from Paris. Within a 15-minute drive are some of the greatest French châteaux - Courances, Dampierre, Fontainebleau - as well as the cobbled painters' village of Barbizon, the school of landscape made famous by Millais, Corot and Rousseau. There are pretty hikes along the Vallée de l'École.

Local points of interest from Pierres d’Histoire

  • Château de Fontainebleau - visit one of the most iconic château of french History and discover the royal apartments of kings and emperors who lived there.
  • Wander in the charming village of Barbizon, the school of landscape, made famous by the masters of impressionist movement.
  • Enjoy wonderful walks in Fontainebleau Forest and discover the Gorges de Franchard, amazing rocks in the heart of the forest.

Introducing

Pierres d’Histoire

It was while staying in the wilds of Scotland at beautifully-restored Landmark Trust house that the seed of the idea for Pierres d’Histoire was sown for its founder, Dominique Imbert. Passionate about the preservation of ancient heritage, he restores or re-builds abandoned historical houses in France, not only breathing new life into them but making them comfortable holiday homes.
