The Experience

The house looks genuinely 18th-century, surrounded by ancient trees and parkland, but it is quite new: clever use of recycled timber and recovered architectural details have created a spacious and beautiful building. The sitting room is elegant and comfortable with antique furniture and china, lovely views over the garden and high, beamed ceilings. On colder days you can light the fire and gather around it.

The large, well-equipped kitchen has doors to a terrace for eating outdoors (also a barbecue) and you’ll find a bottle of wine or local cider plus all the basics for cooking. The lower terrace has an attractive, heated pool with sun loungers and a wisteria-covered pergola. Wander further through old roses, fruit trees and vines for large lawns and oak trees beyond.

In the village at the bottom of the hill there is a good pizzeria or drive 15 minutes to Enghien-les-Bains for restaurants and shops.

What a truly marvellous house! So much thought and taste has gone into every detail: from the supremely comfortable interiors to the handsome garden. The setting is idyllic and everything oozes charm. A brilliant house for a get-together of family and friends in a region loved by the Impressionists, but unknown to the crowds of mass tourism.

The neighbourhood

Set off on walks through the Montmorency forest just behind you, or a 15-minute downhill stroll will take you to the village. The local markets are brilliant and you can walk to fetch all your food, but remember it's all uphill on the way back. A 15-minute drive will take you to Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh lived and worked, and a famous, quite expensive, restaurant - Le Relais des Peintres.

Local points of interest from Pierres d’Histoire

  • Montmorency Forest with many walking routes from the house
  • City of St Leu-la-Forët with its church and a crypt, the old city of St Prix
  • Bike ride on the top of the city
  • Castles to visit : Chateau de la Chasse, Chateau de la Chesnaie, château d'Auvers-sur-Oise
  • Thermal station of Enghien les Bains

Pierres d’Histoire

Picture the wilds of Scotland and a beautifully-restored Landmark Trust house surrounded by wild moors and hardy sheep. It was while staying here that the seed of the idea for Pierres d’Histoire was sown for its founder, Dominique Imbert. Passionate about the preservation of ancient heritage, he restores or re-builds abandoned historical houses in France, not only breathing new life into them but making them comfortable holiday homes.
