The Experience

Originally a cavalry officer’s home, this handsome townhouse in charming Saumur is well placed for you to explore the delights of the Loire Valley. Enter through a splendid oak door to be greeted by your attentive hosts in their calm and peaceful home: white walls, tall ceilings, light flooding in through large windows. Bedrooms are traditional and comfortable and overlook the garden.

Start your day in the dining room with a seasonal spread of fruit salad and pastries, homemade jams and cakes prepared by Guylène before strolling into town for riverside walks, independent shops and restaurants or a wander around the medieval castle. Further afield are more magnificent châteaux, wine tasting, troglodyte houses and the lively cities of Tours and Angers.

Return to spend time in the gardens with its fruit trees, shrubs and fragrant flower beds. Enjoy the sun or seek shade under the courtyard with a reviving cup of tea.

Reviews

I really enjoyed visiting this handsome house and meeting the gentle, softly-spoken owners. The rooms are very comfortable and calm, with brand new bathrooms and large windows. The setting, in a quiet residential street, would be much appreciated on a busy summer day when Saumur bursts into life with its endless wine, food and cycling festivals.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a 15-minute stroll to Château de Saumur with views stretching for miles over the Loire river and rippling countryside. The entire area is studded with castles; visit Montreuil-Bellay, Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau for more opulent pleasure palaces. The Loire is also prime wine country – try the Robert & Marcel Co-operative and Rocheville for tastings.

Local points of interest from François Bellier

  • La Maison de Saumur is a great base for discovering the surrounding countryside and vineyards on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. You can also taste Crémant and other Saumur wines at troglodyte wine caves or grandes maisons.
  • Set off to discover the Loire river from Saumur by gabarre, a traditional flat-bottomed boat – you can admire Saumur from the water, travel along to Monsoreau, watch the sun set, enjoy a glass of Crémant.
  • If you like equestrian shows, you’ll love the Cadre Noir. You can visit the Cavalry School and learn about its history at the Cavalry Museum. If you’re a horse rider, you can join local clubs for rides out into the forest.
  • There are many pretty villages along the edge of the Loire in this region. Head out on wonderful walks, discover châteaux; find flea market treasures, typical restaurants and pretty stone houses.
  • Did you know that there are troglodyte houses and even whole villages in the Saumur region? You can discover these 18th-century dwellings and their former inhabitants’ way of life, and learn about the quarrying of truffeau stone.
  • Discover the region at your own pace via the many cycle routes surrounding Saumur, either along the Loire or through the hills. There are also big cycling events in Saumur such as the Anjou Vélo Vintage – the atmosphere is unforgettable!
