The Experience
Step off the street into gorgeous grandeur. Palm fronds fringe wide steps that lead to glass doors, and floors are themed to reflect the destinations of the Portuguese conquistadors… Africa, America and Asia.
Each room is seductive and each is inspiring, thanks to paintings from Jorge Curval (one canvas features coffee beans spritzed on arrival to release a sensuous aroma!). The suites on the ground floor have courtyards, the rooms at the back are the quietest, and the glass-domed library waits at the top, sprinkled with velvet couches.
Get lost in the steep streets of Ribeira. Visit Igreja de São Francisco and its breath-taking interior. Bar-hop till you drop on the Rua Das Flores, and return to the fabulous ‘Bartolomeu’, its small open kitchen creating tapas, and its wine cellar housed in a bank vault. The inspiration behind it all? The wonderful staff.

Location
The neighbourhood
The hotel is a short stroll from São Bento train station, famed for its azulejo tiles, and the hilly UNESCO-listed Old Town, Ribeira. Head down to the Dom Luis Bridge and cross to the far side of the river, for tastings at the celebrated port houses. Don’t miss the cathedral - or Livraria Lello, the theatrical, intimate bookshop that inspired JK Rowling’s Hogwarts. Modern restaurants abound.

A real treat in the heart of Porto. From the moment we walked through the grand entrance, we were impressed. This beautiful old building has been lovingly restored, with high ceilings and doors giving significant sense of space. We loved the decor and canvas by a local artist on the wall of each room. The whole hotel has a sense of calm and the staff couldn't be more welcoming.
