The Experience

In the Andalusian countryside, where Spain brushes up against Portugal, you bump down a track and the view unfolds to a row of five neat apartments circled by gardens on the banks of the Guadiana river with trees and hills rising beyond. It’s peaceful here, no sounds except birds and the river, guests splashing in the saltwater pool.

Cook simple meals in the dinky kitchenette or use the shared barbecue or larger kitchen in the communal building. It’s a fantastic space to hang out – perfect if you take more than one apartment – with sofas, TV, boardgames and a big fireplace. If you want to be private, eat in your own shaded courtyard, screened by low white walls and pretty plants.

It’s a 15-minute stroll (you’ll need a torch at night) or short drive to the pretty riverside town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana that gazes across to its Portuguese neighbour, Alcoutim. A water taxi runs every half hour, or take the zip wire! There are restaurants on both banks.

  • Being in Spain and popping over to Portugal by water taxi, or even on the 720m zip wire – the world's only cross-border zipline
  • Taking more than one apartment if you come with a big group of friends or family; spending lots of time in the pool and communal building
  • Getting to know an off-the-beaten-track part of Andalusia

Reviews

Heaven on earth! A magical place by the Guadiana river, comfortable and elegant. Lovely pool and lots of activities for an unforgettable stay. A haven of peace and good taste

Laly, Lisboa

Increíble place! Lovely area and fun activities! Paradise between Spain an Portugal!

James, Brighton

Finca Contrabando is in Sanlúcar de Guadiana, the border area just across the water from Portugal. It’s historically know for smuggling commodities between the two countries, hence the name ‘Contrabando’ here! Today it's a peaceful haven; all you can hear is birdsong, and boats going up and down. It’s just a joy to look at and be at one with nature, with lovely walks in the area too. Look across the river at the neighbouring city, Alcoutim, with a different language and time zone. There’s much to enjoy here.

Location

The neighbourhood

Both gleaming white river towns, Sanlúcar de Guadiana on the Spanish side and Alcoutim on the Portuguese, are sleepy little places that hide a colourful past. Smuggling was rife in the 1930s and 40s, with coffee and sugar going one way and cloths and fabric the other – hence the name of the finca. Nowadays both charming towns are peaceful with a castle, church, shops and restaurants – perfect for a day out.

Local points of interest from Marta Jariod

  • Finca Contrabando is located in Sanlúcar de Guadiana in the border area with Portugal. The area is historically known for smuggling commodities between the two countries. Today, at most, a smile is "smuggled" between guests
  • Because how else could you look at nature, the river, the blue sky and the neighbouring city on the other bank? You can reach the finca directly by boat. You get off at the private jetty and start your well-deserved vacation.
  • The owners of the finca love the sea and the river and have been sailing since childhood. They found the perfect place in the picturesque town of Sanlúcar for the rural project that reflects their concept of natural living – there's a slow and respectful approach to the environment here.
  • The customs and solidarity lived in the seaside town on the border between Spain and Portugal were key for the Finca project: to show guests that "travelling slowly" in the midst of nature and using the local resources is the option is to travel.

Introducing

Marta Jariod

Brother and sister Marta and Ignacio bought the land in 2007, and slowly transformed a collection of pigsties into five stylish apartments with landscaped gardens, a pool, and a communal barn. They live about 45 minutes away but are always available and often on site.
