The Experience

Walkers will adore this charming first floor chalet apartment tucked in the Spanish Pyrenees. Val d’Aran in northern Catalonia, just where it brushes up against France, is a bit of a hidden gem: a playground for skiers in the snowy season, the mountains offer spectacular hikes in spring, summer and autumn, with excellent paths leading to a string of pretty villages.

Take the lift or communal stairs into a beamed, open-plan space. Relax on comfy sofas and chairs and admire gorgeous mountain views from the balcony. Both double bedrooms are on the same floor, a master with en suite and balcony, the smaller with a separate shower room.

Eat out at any of the authentic restaurants nearby, mostly serving traditional Aranese meals cooked over open fires. Outdoorsy activities abound: lake swims, rafting, horse riding, cycling and walking.

We think you'll love

  • Hiring mountain bikes or e-bikes and taking to the hills - the routes are spellbinding
  • Checking out Vielha, the main town in the region, as well as all the smaller (yet lively) villages. Most host weekly markets and all have thriving bars and restaurants for drinks and meals out
  • Taking a picnic to the top of the mountain: the chairlift runs all summer in nearby Baqueira

Reviews

George and Louise have created a wonderfully warm, inviting and unpretentious space in this hidden corner of the Catalonian Pyrenees. Stride out through the hills, dip into the icy rivers, soak up that fresh mountain air - it is a nature-lovers dream out here. Wake up to views for miles from your apartment balconies; dine on traditional Aranese fare in the many fabulous restaurants nearby.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are a handful of restaurants dotted around the cobbled streets of Escunhau which also has a Romanesque church. Betren, 20-min walk, has a good eatery and Vielha, a little further on, is bigger with more choice. Visit the natural springs in Arties or the Refugi de Montgarri, a mountain refuge in a 1117 abbey with painted frescoes for a riverside picnic. But mainly you'll be on glorious walks.

Local points of interest from George & Louise

  • This is an area far from the maddening crowd with a whole host of activities within a beautiful environment.
  • There are so many pretty villages in the surrounding area, all with their own individuality, those we particularly like are Unha, Arties & Bagergue.
  • The walks we must recommend are to the refuge at Montgarri, pla de Bagergue & to the waterfalls at Es Bordes.
  • Every village has an array of restaurants mostly family run serving excellent local produce, not forgetting Casa Turnay in our village only a stones throw away.

Introducing

George & Louise

George and Louise bought the apartment in 2015 and live here in winter. They completely redecorated, putting in a new kitchen, knocking down a wall, modernising the place. They love it here: skiing but also love walking, river swimming, eating out. They're relaxed about kids and dogs visiting and just want others to enjoy it as much as they do. David, the building manager, will check you in.
