The Experience

Find comfort in this old Valencian farmhouse-meets architect designed eco-build. Generous rooms with views over the sierras retain the charm of the original stone walls and dovecote windows, with underfloor heating and walk-in showers. Miles from anything, the breeze and birdsong are the only sounds.

Start the day with Andrea’s sourdough, bowls of Valencian oranges and olive oil from trees growing in the park. Hire one of the top-notch mountain bikes (Ben is a keen rider) and head out on miles of trails; keep your eyes peeled for griffon vultures. For lazy days, there’s a big swimming pool overlooking the hillside carpeted with Aleppo pine.

There’s plenty of space to spread out – fix yourself a drink from the bar in the living room, or sneak away to the snug with a book. Dinners are taken together at the table (made from the original farmhouse beams); expect Mediterranean and middle eastern flavours. Paellas are, of course, a staple.

Reviews

Wow! what a beautiful place Andrea and Ben have created! A very relaxed feel with fabulous comfy rooms, excellent food and two great hosts. All in a stunning national park. We recently stayed at Mariola Secreta for a 4 day break and couldn’t recommend more highly. Ben and Andrea had thought of just about everything to make our stay as relaxing as it could possibly be from the minute Ben collected us from Alicante airport to the minute he dropped us back for our return flight. Rooms, food, mountain biking, pool - just everything was fab!

An absolutley fabulous place to relax and unwind. The house is simply stunning and it's situated in the most beautiful surroundings. The hosts Ben & Andrea are superb and on hand 24/7 to assist with any of your needs. Definitely a 10/10!

This is a beautifully restored and furnished farmhouse. Andrea and Ben are exceptional hosts and provide exceptional comfort. I would love to return for another yoga retreat with Leanne who is an excellent teacher and the culinary delights conjured up by Andrea. My particular dietary needs were well catered for and the home-baked sourdough every day was truly scrumptious!

Angela and Ben are the perfect hosts in the most sublime setting in the Serra de Mariola. This amazing couple have created, from dust, an amazing house that is both stylish and welcoming. Angela’s home cooked food is delicious. ( there maybe magic and wizardry involved because it’s that scrumptious) And nothing is too much trouble for Ben, who is a font of local knowledge. Would definitely recommend a stay here and I am definitely going back.

We stayed here for a 4 day yoga retreat. The farmhouse is stunning, beautifully restored and decorated. Andrea and Ben have thought of everything guests may need for their stay. We had our yoga sessions by the pool when it was warm. When it got cooler, we were in the 'barn' with huge windows (Spotting the occasional red squirrel as we practiced). Aside from the yoga Ben gave us a taste of the local mountain biking and walking which was great, loads to explore. Andera's cooking was fantastic, both delicious and healthy. I would highly recommend Mariola Secreta, it's a special place.

Ben and Andrea are the most accommodating superb hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. Fabulous food, gorgeously renovated rooms, 100% recommend. Lovely pool, walking/cycling trails. We went for a yoga retreat and it was perfect in every way.

We have just enjoyed an incredible break at this gorgeous retreat. Such peace and tranquility! Ben took us on some incredible guided mountain bike rides (from the doorstep!) deep in to the national park, with great variety of trails from cross country to downhill… Ben and Andrea have done an extraordinary job of renovating this house, whilst retaining all of the charm and character of the old building. As well as this, they are amazing hosts and Andrea is a superb cook, creating fresh creations seemingly effortlessly every day! Superb break to get away and recharge for a few days.

Mariola Secreta is a superbly renovated traditional Valencian 'Masia' farmhouse set in the heart of the Sierra Mariola National Park. Impressive but informal design, friendly hosts, a superb 15m pool and surrounding tranquillity make for a delightful place to simply relax . For cyclists there are off and on-road adventures and walking in the Mariola is first class.

Location

The neighbourhood

With views of the sierras over uninterrupted pine forest, the farmhouse is about 1km off a rural road, surrounded by the Serra Mariola Natural Park, known for its rich flora, golden eagles and excellent hiking and biking trails. Bocairent, 15 minutes' drive, has a restaurant and shop selling local produce. Pick-up can be arranged from the train station, 30 mins, or Alicante airport, 1 hour.

Local points of interest from Andrea & Ben Dillistone

  • With its unique flora and fauna the Mariola Natural Park is an area of outstanding beauty and one of Spain's best kept secrets. A hike up MontCabrer, the highest peak at 1390m for a birds eye view of the Valencia province and across to Ibiza.
  • Explore the medieval village of Bocairent with its narrow winding streets, ice cave and bull ring carved out of the rock. The locals love a fiesta and there are many to choose from throughout the year including The Three Kings and Moors & Christians.
  • The trails of the Mariola Park are perfect for cross country mountain and gravel bike riding. There are trails to suit all levels of skill and fitness and Mariola Secreta can offer you guided rides and bike hire (including ebikes).
  • Swim in the crystal clear pools at local beauty spot Pou Clar. The mountain water is very refreshing even in the height of summer!
  • If you´re lucky the Griffon Vultures, with their 2.8m wingspan, will soar over El Cipreret during your stay. Alternatively you can visit their colony (of around 100 birds) nesting nearby.
  • The region of Fontanars del Alforins has many family Bodegas producing high quality organic wines. We serve several of them at El Cipreret. The rows of vines make for a stunning view and who wouldn't want to miss a wine tasting at one of the Vineyards.

Introducing

Andrea & Ben Dillistone

Stumbling upon an abandoned farmhouse on a bike ride one day, Ben made a throwaway suggestion which snowballed into a 5-year project to renovate Mariola Secreta into an eco-friendly retreat, deep in the Spanish countryside. The couple fell in love with rural life here over 20 years of holidaying nearby; the food, the people and the landscape drew them to Sierra Mariola. They now live here full time.
