The Experience

A sweet pea and lavender-clad pergola leads to your own barn… Carmel and David give you a fresh bedroom with tip-top linen and cheerful bedspread on a seriously comfy bed; they have an interesting library that you’re welcome to browse too. Breakfast is a moveable feast – have it outside the barn in the sun, over in the main house or on the deck by a stream; tuck into locally sourced everything with homemade marmalade and jams. Masses to do nearby – gardens, cycling, rowing on the river Ouse, walks on the Greensand Ridge. Return to explore the pretty cottage garden, and then curl up with a book on the sofa in your room.

Reviews

Lovely overnight stay at this very welcoming and friendly B&B. A glass of wine and chat with our hosts on arrival then after settling in to their roomy barn we headed off to the pub literally a few minutes walk away. Lovely breakfast and chat the next morning, we were made to feel very much at home. Thank you 😊

Thanks very much for a lovely stay, the accommodation was very comfortable with plenty of room for us and our toddler. Carmel and David made us feel very welcome with scones and jam on arrival and delicious breakfasts. They kept our 2 year old very well fed and entertained throughout!

We had a truly wonderful stay at Forge Cottage. It was our first family mini break since having our baby (who is 3.5 months) we also bought our little dog Ellie along with us and Carmel and David (the hosts) gave us such a warm welcome (fresh scones & strawberries - yummy) and were so accommodating throughout our stay (Travel cot provided, as well as a fan as it was very hot and they spoilt our Ellie with treats too). They booked meal reservations for us and gave good recommendations for days out. We would highly recommend Forge Cottage, we would definitely like to visit again one day.

We had a very comfortable stay with Carmel and David. The little house at the bottom of the garden was perfect and fitted out with everything we needed - the bed was extremely comfortable. Our hosts were very friendly and the breakfasts delicious. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitley visit again if we were in the area.

Super little cottage within the owners' quintessential English garden - beautifully presented with a bedroom/sitting area, good shower and a kitchen as well. David and Carmel are excellent hosts - fabulous breakfasts - and can give good ideas where to eat and visit. Well placed for Bletchley Park. We would certainly recommend and will visit again if in the area.

We had high hopes having read previous reviews and we were not disappointed. Great communication from the outset including places to visit and a recommendation where to eat on the Saturday evening - The George Inn which was 200 yards away and very good - which Carmel also offered to organise. A warm welcome and get to know you tea and coffee. The cottage we stayed in was beautifully appointed with lots of nice and practical touches e.g. umbrellas and bedside torches. Fantastic breakfast the following day. Great hosts make a place and David and Carmel fall into this bracket.

David, Sandgate

We stayed at Forge Cottage for 2 nights. Carmel & David were very welcoming with tea and scones on arrival! The cottage is lovely- we had requested a travel cot & David went out especially to buy a new mattress for the cot as he felt the original mattress was too thin. They were warm&friendly towards our daughter & won her over by the end of the trip! Breakfast was tasty & the porridge made especially for our daughter was appreciated. The morning sun did wake up our daughter early each morning (5:30am) so David said he would look into blinds for the velux windows. Family friendly, great hosts!

Meenal, Uxbridge

Carmel and David were the perfect hosts and provided everything we needed with tea, coffee and scones on arrival. They were very warm and welcoming and great company. The cottage itself was immaculate, with beautiful decor and of course was spotless. We had a very comfortable night, with everything we needed, including TV, Wifi and kitchen facilities. We would not hesitate to recommend this to friends and family and only wish we had the opportunity to enjoy the accommodation and hospitality for a little longer.

We loved our 3 day stay at Forge Cottage. Carmel, David and Issy (puppy) could not have been more accommodating. Our suite of rooms was bright, clean and comfortable and breakfast was delicious. We also appreciated the hosts comprehensive knowledge of local attractions to suit our need to make the best of the days spent in an area previously unknown to us.

We absolutely loved The Little Barn which had everything we needed for our overnight stay. Carmel and David were very welcoming with scones and fresh strawberries on arrival. Our accommodation was very pretty with a generous bedroom with a very comfortable bed and crisp white linen. Every where was clean, modern but with touches of old style furnishings - we couldn't ask for more. The Little Barn is an ideal base for visiting the area and a few days away from the hustle and bustle of town living. I would highly recommend this B & B it is delightful for two people.

Very nice accommodation in a quiet, attractive village. Excellent breakfasts, welcoming and helpful hosts. Strongly recommended.

My wife and I had a lovely Autumn weekend retreat at Forge Cottage. Everything about it was warm and welcoming - the pot of tea on arrival, the cosy private barn, even the (lively!) Jack Russell. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere extremely relaxed. Carmel and David are wonderful hosts with a real gift for hospitality and a wealth of local knowledge. We would heartily recommend Forge Cottage to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway.

Lovely little cottage with a comfortable bed, tastefully decorated in semi-scandinavian minimalism, and a small but perfectly adequate bathroom. Hosts were very welcoming and friendly and I was offered tea and cake on arrival. The B&B cottage opens onto a perfect little cottage garden, and you walk through an arbour of roses and lavender to get to the main house where breakfast is served. A cosy little seating area is just outside the B&B cottage, where you can sit and drink a glass of wine in the evening, or a cup of tea in the morning. Sadly it poured with rain while we were there!

Amanda, Alfriston

We had a lovely overnight stay at this beautiful place. Carmel and David were thoughtful, generous hosts and made our short visit very special. The room is fitted out very well, and we especially loved being able to sit outside and enjoy the weather and the glorious garden. Breakfast was spectacular - we hope to come again!

Ruth, Oxford

We booked Forge Cottage Barn as we were in the area for a family reunion. Carmel & David were delightful & met us with a comforting pot of tea before showing us to the converted barn in their gardens. It's a lovely place to stay with crisp clean bed linen and a wonderfully comfy bed. They have thought of everything and we felt very much at home. The cottage is a short walk from two pubs that both serve food, another plus. In the morning we had a real treat of a delicious home cooked 'full English' in their beautiful cottage. A lovely couple, beautiful home and we are happy to recommend.

Katie, Eastbourne

What a lovely welcome, cold glass of white and nibbles. Room gorgeous ad comfy. Breakfast was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend! Thankyou, Jo& Chris

Jo, Brighton

A lovely peaceful barn in a beautiful part of the country. Great walks, lovely pubs nearby for food. David and Carmel couldn't have been nicer hosts.

  • Henry VIII hunted here at Ampthill Castle and his wife Catherine of Aragon was sent here when their divorce was in process. She introduced lace making to Bedfordshire. Kit Williams buried the Golden Hare at her monument.

  • Visit Bletchley Park (THE secret intelligence centre of WW2- home of Enigma) only 25 minutes drive; or go back further in time to Woburn Abbey (6m) home of the Dukes of Bedford; or visit the gardens of Wrest Park (English Heritage) just three miles away.
  • Forge Cottage is on the Greensand Ridge, a forty mile footpath running across ancient settlements, wonderfully quiet and rural yet only 45mins by train to St.Pancras (a destination in itself) from nearby Flitwick Station.
  • Enjoy the food in this area, especially the venison and 'black' bacon from Woburn, wine from Warden Abbey and cereals from Jordan's Mill (open to visitors). We serve all of these at Forge Cottage and can direct you to Ampthill Brewery if you love beer.
