The Experience

The house and the cottages nearby belong to the Rothschild Estate – you have access to the Woodland Walk with five shepherd’s huts along the route: one for quiet reading or writing, a yoga retreat, a children’s craft centre, a nature hut with a sofa and a birdwatching hide with binoculars. Children can play in the fairy garden and build dens, or play football and swingball up at the Pavillion Green.

There’s loads of space inside, a library of books, board games, darts board and chess. Cooking in the beautiful kitchen will be a pleasure, but The Platter Company can deliver artisan charcuterie, cheeses and puddings. Bacon, sausages and eggs from the Seven Well’s butcher in Oundle wait in the fridge. The pub, The Chequered Skipper, is a two-minute walk.

A large, grassy garden has uninterrupted views over fields and trees. Light the barbecue and have a long lazy drink in the summerhouse while the children tumble about on the lawn.

Reviews

Chapel Farmhouse is perfect for a multi-generational getaway. The games room will bring out the competitive streak in all ages and the tranquillity of the sitting room will appeal to those wanting to relax. The fabulously equipped kitchen will ensure some memorable meals - or order in some delicious platters. Enjoy summer BBQ evenings in the garden or step across the way to an atmospheric pub.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can organise clay pigeon shooting on the estate. It's 2 miles to Oundle for another pub, The Tap and Hand on the wharf overlooking the river Nene. Here you'll also find shops, a brewery and Hambleton Bakery. Walk along the river, kayak, canoe, or hurl yourselves into Nene Extreme Adventures. Lutton Farm shop (open May to October) has amazing strawberries in season. Stamford is 16 miles.

Local points of interest from Carol Maibaum

  • Oundle (4 Miles), surrounded on three sides by the River Nene, is a beautiful stone built market town. The town centre has many stone houses over 300 years old, divided by narrow alleys and courtyards.
  • With a variety of habitats including wildflower meadows, woodlands and wetlands, the Nene Valley is one of the most important inland areas for wildlife in England. Great way to explore. Hire a canoe in Oundle!
  • The Chequered Skipper in Ashton Village is a picturesque thatched country pub. About 1 1/2 Mile walk.
  • Rutland Water. An internationally famous nature reserve. Ideal family day out - cycling, wildlife and adventure.
  • Tap & Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar at Oundle Wharf. Great atmosphere . Ingredients sourced locally. Bar showcases beer from their sister and neighbour Nene Valley Brewery.
  • Stamford is idyllic enough to have formed the backdrop for television costume dramas such as Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice. Independent traders create the perfect shopping experience.
