The Experience

This Victorian cottage, next to Lady Rothschild Dairy, was once the home of the cowman. It’s cosy, comfortable and neat as a pin with colourful fabrics, thick cushions and crisp linen on the beds. Escape with a book to the library or one of the shepherd’s huts on the Woodland Walk, bring binoculars and watch the many birds or a yoga mat for a bit of peace of quiet. Children will adore the big lawn for games and tumbles.

The kitchen is compact but you’ll find fresh eggs from the farm and dry cured bacon and sausages from Seven Wells Butcher in Oundle, so your first breakfast is sorted. If you don’t feel like cooking there’s a good pub in the village (2 miles) The Chequered Skipper or The Platter Company can deliver charcuterie, cheeses and puddings.

Deep woodland surrounds you for forest bathing and den building and the skies are truly dark. Lovely to wander over to the barbecue area on a summer eve with a pint or glass of wine.

Reviews

As with all the properties on the Ashton Estate, Home Farm Cottage oozes charm and comfort. Backing onto woodland, it is in an idyllic location with birdsong the most dominant sound. A shepherd's hut in the garden as well as a hammock in the summer are thoughtful additions. Build dens in the woods, watch for animals, birds and butterflies or maybe write a novel; this is a timeless place. Superb.

Location

The neighbourhood

Have a go at clay pigeon shooting on the estate. It’s three miles to another pub in Oundle Wharf (with a view over the river Nene) and you'll also find shops, a brewery and Hambleton Bakery. Walk along the river, kayak, canoe, or hurl yourselves into Nene Extreme Adventures. Lutton Farm shop (open May to October) has amazing strawberries in season. Stamford is 16 miles.

Local points of interest from Carol Maibaum

  • Oundle (4 Miles), surrounded on three sides by the River Nene, is a beautiful stone built market town. The town centre has many stone houses over 300 years old, divided by narrow alleys and courtyards.
  • With a variety of habitats including wildflower meadows, woodlands and wetlands, the Nene Valley is one of the most important inland areas for wildlife in England. Great way to explore. Hire a canoe in Oundle!
  • The Chequered Skipper in Ashton Village is a picturesque thatched country pub. About 1 1/2 Mile walk.
  • Rutland Water. An internationally famous nature reserve. Ideal family day out - cycling, wildlife and adventure.
  • Tap & Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar at Oundle Wharf. Great atmosphere . Ingredients sourced locally. Bar showcases beer from their sister and neighbour Nene Valley Brewery.
  • Stamford is idyllic enough to have formed the backdrop for television costume dramas such as Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice. Independent traders create the perfect shopping experience.
