The Experience

Enter into the cloakroom and then onto an open-plan sitting room with many beams and deep window seats, interesting books, pictures by local artist Shan Miller and a wood-burner (logs provided). You’ll find comfy beds and good quality linen and towels, plus a radio in every bedroom (no TVs). The sweet kitchen has plenty of kit and an electric range cooker, bread, milk, honey and cider – probably from Sam’s Cider down the road. There’s an honesty shed in the village too for eggs and home baked cakes.

Check the map for a pub then set off from the cottage along footpaths to Broadwoodkelly for a beautiful 1523 stained glass window in the north wall of the church, or to Winkleigh woods for a tramp about. Nearby is Appledore for boat trips and Hocking’s ice cream.

Cosy up with a book in front of the wood burner; soak in the bath with lovely Bramley lotions. Have your supper in your courtyard while the sun sets – sample the cider, light the fire pit, listen to the church clock chime each quarter – all night too.

Reviews

Thanks for a lovely week at Church Steps Cottage - so lovely to step away from city life and into such a welcoming village. We loved the Kings Arms, and exploring Dartmoor and the North Coast. All so beautiful, even in the rain!

Anna, London

The cottage was wonderful in a fabulous position along with excellent views and the host Catherine was amazing informing us of places to eat/drink/places to visit etc !!! Delicious local basic foods for us on arrival too.

Michael, Shrewsbury

Not the usual empty shell, Church Steps Cottage is full of personal touches and attention to detail. Bedrooms are generous and charming and there's a very pretty courtyard for sitting outside. We were very comfortable and had a great stay. Location is in the centre of Devon so, if you are happy to drive, there's lots to do - South to Dartmoor or North to the coast. We loved Woolly Alpacas, (just outside Winkleigh), River Dart Country Park, climbing Hound Tor, Tunnels Beach and Ilfracombe Sea Safari..... We hope to come back.

Andrea, Beckenham

A very comfortable and homely cottage in a lively village with a great pub. You're just a short drive from Dartmoor for grand walks and cycles.

Location

The neighbourhood

As well as The King's Arms and the post office, you'll find a butcher, café, shop and a florist in the village. Dartmoor beckons you for spectacular walking with soaring views, cyclists can join the Tarka Trail. Catch the bus to Torrington for the RHS Garden Rosemoor or in the other direction to the market town of Crediton. It's 30 mins to the north coast for surfing waves or the south for calmer waters.

Local points of interest from Catherine

  • The Church of All Saints is next door to cottage, parts of which date back to the 14th century. Take an evening stroll through the churchyard before calling into the thatched Kings Arms for an ale in the pub garden or for mainly local home cooked produce
  • RHS Rosemoor is a 15 min drive or bus ride away. For alpaca walking, goats to cuddle, miniature ponies, miniature donkeys and Swiss Valais Blacknose Sheep, visit “Woolley Animals” on the outskirts of Winkleigh
  • Monthly market at village hall/weekly pannier market at Torrington/fortnightly farmers market at Crediton. Crediton also has an Independent wine seller (Grape and Grain) and a The Crediton Coffee Co that roasts it’s own beans
  • Fiona’s farm shop/cafe, Down Farm organic veg growers, Sam’s Cider, Ten Acres Vineyard all within half a mile (tasting encouraged). Travel further towards Appledore, an estuary town, for plenty of Artisan shops/galleries, or to beaches at Westward Ho/Bude
  • Tarka Trail. Cycle hire at Torrington (the Old Station) or at Bideford (East the Water). South Molton has regular country markets - vintage collectibles or livestock. They have a website for checking what’s going on during your visit ……
  • Viveka Garden yoga farm retreat is closeby at West Leigh- call ahead to book in a relaxing class or pre-arrange a longer course to add some extra relaxation to your holiday. Winkleigh is also home to the renowned Sculpture School hosting taster days/events
