The Experience

Downstairs is filled with quirky taxidermy, cosy corners, knickknacks and bubbly staff – this is a lively and fun place to spend time, either before or after a walk or as a destination. This historic coaching inn sits on the side of a busy road but is also surrounded by beautiful and rural countryside and there’s room to spill out in summer for a pint, or a Pimms, in the sunshine.

The cooking style is homely pub food with specials, classics like fish and chips and pie and mash plus foraged wild garlic rigatoni. The menu is changed every two to three weeks and is seasonal using ethically sourced meats and local produce. If you’re having breakfast then the bread will be home baked, the cereal homemade, eggs are from Beechwood Farm and the honey is local.

Bedrooms are upstairs on either side of two staircases, not as quirky (yet) as downstairs but bright and clean and there’s a small (separate) cottage about to be renovated too.

Location

The neighbourhood

In the village you'll find a tea room, The Tea Cosy and also a good village shop which has a pottery and painting studio. You're close to The Test Way - 44 miles of spectacular walking on chalk downs all the way to Southampton. The Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery is 15 minutes in the car for a tour and for stocking up. Highclere Castle is 20 minutes and the West Berkshire Brewery half an hour.

Local points of interest from Billy & Ryan Stacey

  • Nestled in a beautiful valley location, there are wonderful walks of various distances all around.
  • The River Test is renowned as the venue for some of the best chalkstream fishing in the world. We know all the best people to speak to to arrange a great day out.
  • Some of the best shooting estates in the country are less than 10 minutes away. We have gun cabinets and dog beds and everything that you could need.
  • Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey) is 15 minutes away from the pub.
  • Stonehenge (world heritage site) is 30 minutes drive from us.
  • Fabulous shopping can be found in Newbury and Winchester, both less than 30 mins from the pub.

Introducing

Billy & Ryan Stacey

Billy (front of house and interior design) and Ryan (clever in the kitchen) previously owned The Pheasant inn up the road. Billy's done another makeover in her own, very distinctive, style which reflects her bright personality. They've lived and worked in this area for many years and have a big following so you'll always find locals downstairs. They'll tackle the bedrooms and the cottage next.
