The Experience

Come for unspoilt countryside bouncing with wildlife, super friendly young hosts, fab breakfasts and a large library to peak your interest. It’s a relaxing place to be and you’re welcome to sit in the garden watching birds, wander through it admiring rare flora and fauna, dabble in the rushing stream or strike out into woodland for red deer spotting. The views over the valley are glorious and serious walkers can join many paths through the Exmoor National Park.

A Nutsford House Full English (or vegetarian and vegan varieties) will set you up for time outdoors. All ingredients are locally sourced with eggs from their rescue hens and porridge and toast made on the Aga. Views from the dining room soar over the valley, and if the weather isn’t good you can sit by the wood-burner in the library where you’ll find lots of lovely books.

South-facing, simple bedrooms have those views, modern bathrooms and comfy beds. The peace is hypnotic.

Reviews

Amanda and James made us most welcome to their beautiful and comfortable house tucked away in the folds of the countryside near Exmoor, as did Louis the golden retriever. Situated in a peaceful garden, with wonderful views over the valley, Nutsford is a place to switch off and take time to appreciate the natural world around you. It is also ideally placed for visits to many sites of historic interest, among them Cleeve Abbey and Dunster Castle.

We had the most wonderful stay at Nutsford House, the location was fabulous and very peaceful. Amanda and James were so friendly and welcoming, and James' homemade baked beans made a tasty addition to the delicious breakfast. Our room was so comfortable and the fabulous location was convenient for visiting some lovely areas around Exmoor.

Teresa, Somerset

James and Amanda have got a good thing going here. Great location within easy reach of all Exmoor’s different activities, a very attentive, warm and chatty welcome, and an unbeatable veggie full English breakfast (I have no doubt that the carnivorous version is equally good.) We wish them great success with their new(ish) venture.

Colin, Truro

Had a delightful 3 night break at Nutsford House, Dulverton. The hosts, James and Amanda were very friendly and helpful. Very tasty cooked breakfast and some lovely walks in a beautiful part of the country.

Elaine, West Wickham

We very much enjoyed our weekend stay at Nutsford House. Extremely comfortable facilities, wonderful breakfast and great hospitality - a perfect combination!

Sarah, Windsor

We absolutely loved our stay at Nutsford House with Amanda and James. It really is the perfect B&B – a wonderfully warm welcome (complete with tea and home-made scones!), beautifully appointed double room overlooking the garden, private bathroom with sparkling clean and spacious shower (and bath), and a delicious breakfast. We loved exploring the garden and woodland around the house and watching all the birds on the feeders from the breakfast room. We wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely be back. Thank you, Amanda and James, for sharing your lovely home with us.

Tess, Oxford

Lovely house in an amazing setting. Really good breakfast too!

Graham, Oxford

Wonderful location, quiet without being too isolated - only a few minutes drive from Dulverton - and surrounded by woodland and lots of wildlife. Fantastic welcome from Amanda and James, with tea and homemade scones. Room was very comfortable, and choice of breakfast options to suit anyone's tastes. Will definitely be planning my return, and hope to see the red deer next time!

Simon, Northampton

Nutsford House is a very peaceful place to stay. We were made to feel very welcome. Nice touch to be given tea and scones on arrival. Breakfast was very tasty. We only stayed the one night but felt very relaxed just listening to the bird song. Would thoroughly recommend staying here. Thank you Amanda and James.

Delightful few days here. A lovely quiet spacious room (Siskin room) beautifully furnished. Classic country house ambience with spotless modern facilities. The windows opened out onto the beautiful gardens with many unusual and interesting trees and shrubs. Lovely woodland walks all around and Dulverston, with interesting independent shops, is about a 15 minute drive away. Amanda and James are really lovely, friendly, helpful hosts. We appreciated the scones and tea on arrival! The breakfasts were great with lots of choice, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Barry, Talybont

Amanda and James are great hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. We really enjoyed our stay in what is a most relaxing, beautiful setting. Ideally located to explore the magic of Exmoor.

Keith, Okehampton

I really enjoyed my stay at Nutsford. The house is beautiful, and the area is so quiet and picturesque. I loved the garden! My room was clean and comfortable, and I enjoyed the breakfast. Amanda and James were happy to accommodate my dietary requirements and provided plenty of vegan options to choose from. They were also very helpful with driving directions and advising the best countryside walks. I highly recommend Nutsford House and I will be coming back next time I'm in the area.

James and Amanda have recently begun their new venture in the B & B world and are already making an exciting impression. They have a lovely home surrounded by 10 acres of gardens and woodland. They are kindly and considerate people providing superb accommodation and magnificent breakfasts. We would make only one suggestion, i.e. to install a TV in the bedrooms. Linda and David Knight

A very warm welcome including tea and scones. A lovely house in a wonderful rural setting. Clean and comfortable bedrooms tastefully decorated. Very generous breakfast well cooked with plenty of choice. Our stay was unfortunately curtailed by Covid but we will definitely be back.

Barbara, Northampton

What a delightful place. A credit to all the hard work James and Amanda have done in a very short time. Outstanding scenery, very comfortable rooms, amazing breakfast - what isn't there to like? A lovely warm welcome from the hosts, nothing was too much trouble.

Anne, Towcester

A beautiful house, woods and gardens to enjoy. Such a peaceful and welcoming home amidst all the splendour and wildness of nature. We have enjoyed our stay here, and especially the warmth and care from James and Amanda (and their cats and dog!) We are leaving feeling refreshed and ready to explore more of Devon.

Keith, London

Thank you for leaving the chocolates for us. That was a lovely surprise and was very kind of you - they are delicious!

Moira, London

We had a wonderful few days at Nutsford House - just perfection. Amanda and James are perfect hosts, making us unbelievably welcome and throughout our stay were so, so thoughtful. Our accommodation and facilities, were just faultless. The exceptional breakfast sets the tone for the whole day. Nutsford House itself is a gem, and with its extensive gardens and views, deserves a very special mention on its own!

Bunty andMark, Bristol

What a fab little place, beautifully remote, plenty of outdoor space, nature literally on your doorstep. Close enough to explore the beauty of Exmoor, Dulverton a stones throw away for a lovely town.

Location

The neighbourhood

Dulverton is a short walk or a 5-minute drive for tea rooms, shops, restaurants and pubs. You can also canoe or kayak along the river Barle, have a pint at the Bridge Inn, or head to Wimbleball Lake for more watersports. For fine dining Woods Bar and Restaurant is excellent but you must book ahead. The Two Moors Way which takes you through Exmoor and Dartmoor is close by.

Local points of interest from James & Amanda Gillam

  • Three things that make our area especially magical : the red deer that are almost part of the community here, the night sky which has to be seen to be believed and the streams and rivers which provide the calm soundtrack to everyday life here.
  • The local wildlife are a star attraction. The bird feeders teem with a huge variety of species such as nuthatch and marsh tits. Take a walk into the woods and you should see a whole host more, as well as the incredible red deer that pass through.
  • Exmoor National Park is right on our doorstep. A 10 minute drive and the landscape changes dramatically. Great for walking, cycling, wild swimming, watersports at Wimbleball Lake and, of course, our world famous Exmoor ponies.
  • Step outside on a clear night and you are confronted with one of our lesser known treasures - the night sky. Stargazing is a magical experience here. Exmoor is famous for its Dark Skies and hosts a Dark Sky Festival every Autumn.
  • Dulverton is a 5 minute drive away and is home to independent shops, tea rooms, pubs and great places to dine like Woods Restaurant. You can get a spa treatment too or visit the National Park Centre. There are National Trust properties within 30 minutes.
  • Our area hosts interesting events and workshops all through the year. You can take part in foraging trips, guided walks, literary and musical events, art workshops and stargazing activities. We can also organise private yoga for you at Nutsford House.
