The Experience

Inside all is warm and comfortable. A big sunny drawing room has an open wood fire, plenty of space for all, books, TV and games if you’re stuck indoors and a lovely dining room for sociable meals. You’ll find fresh flowers in season from the estate garden, good art on the walls and wonderful views through original windows to the rolling countryside.

Bedrooms are upstairs, softly carpeted and with goose down duvets and pillows, crisp cotton, warm throws and plenty of hanging space. The twin has particularly splendid views over the hills. An east-facing patio with table and chairs is a grand spot for a morning cuppa, there’s a lawn big enough to sprawl on and some handsome mature trees if you need some shade.

Head to the Peak District for challenging hikes, climb Kinder Scout for spectacular views, or stroll gentler routes along disused railway lines. Return to much comfort, a well-equipped kitchen and a barbecue in summer.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in between the Peak District and the Staffordshire moorlands for fab cycling and walking but you can just mooch about the estate. Walk to the Duncombe Arms in 20 minutes for adventurous pub classics, craft gins and a pint of Duncombe ale. Ashbourne, a charming market town, has antique shops. cafés and boutiques. Spectacular Chatsworth is close and also the reservoir at Carsington for watery fun.

Local points of interest from James Oddy

  • The local area is renowned for the walking, most notably in the Peak District. Discover sparkling river valleys, rolling green fields and flourishing wildlife on many of the trails available
  • Chatsworth House has more than 30 rooms and one of Europe’s most significant art collections to explore and is just 40 minutes away
  • Croxden Abbey is reputed to be where the worst King of England dies, King John. The Abbey is the finest monastic ruin in Staffordshire and is an excellent place to explore for all ages
  • Haddon Hall, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, sits in Elizabethan terraced gardens overlooking the River Wye and has been described as ‘the most perfect English House to survive from the Middle Ages’. It is also just 45 minutes away
  • The nearby towns of Ashbourne and Leek bristle with independent antique shops, specialist art galleries and craft boutiques clustered around their market squares and on their high streets
