The Experience

A rural ramble brings you to a flint and brick bolthole – tucked into the courtyard of the main house. Joanna has restored her stables with a blend of old and new: beams, lime washed walls, rustic window sills, modern log-burner, swish new bathrooms. Bedrooms (‘Hayloft’ up, ‘Coach House’ down) are fresh and comfy – one has a double sofabed for extra guests. Wide French windows in the big dining/sitting room open to the pool – have a dip on summer mornings; dahlias and roses fill the garden. Joanna brings over breakfast: homemade jams, home-buzzed honey, a full English spread. Walk from the door; hop on a bike and discover nearby Bury.

Reviews

A wonderful oasis. Gorgeous room, garden and pool. Joanna is the perfect hostess, friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. We celebrated my husband’s birthday in style! Thank you for everything.

Briony, Norfolk

What a wonderful place to stay! Joanna is a lovely host and nothing was too much trouble. Her breakfast were superb. The accommodation is luxurious with all mod cons. The garden is beautiful. Our only regret was that we stayed too early in the year to be able to use the outdoor swimming pool! Thanks for a memorable stay.

Isabel, Hexham

What a lovely place to stay! One night just not enough,so comfortable, beautiful area. Breakfast was excellent; we must return when we have the chance. Tim and Christine

We were in the delightfully private old stable alongside the main house. From Joanna's smiling welcome to a fabulous full English breakfast it was most enjoyable. Joanna is kindness itself and the amenities are excellent. Guests have access to a beautifully planted garden and a heated swimming pool. We will certainly be back and look forward to staying longer.

Sheila, Lewes

This is the most gorgeous B and B we have stayed in. The decor is delightful and there is everything you need for the perfect stay. Tea and coffee making facilities with home baked biscuits in the bedroom, together with a shared kitchen. Breakfast was amazing with so many different choices from the full English to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or smoked haddock and poached eggs which have come from their own hens. We woke up to the smell of freshly baked bread. An added bonus was the swimming pool which we made use of twice in the 24 hours we were there. Joanna is the perfect host!

Fiona, Aylsham

We stayed a week. It's the best of a BNB with its individual and homely touches like homemade cookies and cake on arrival, the best of a 5* hotel in its luxury, spaciousness and cleanliness, and the best of self catering because we were in an entirely different building to the main house, not at all overlooked, and we had freedom and privacy to come and go as we pleased without fear of disturbing our hosts. We didn't want to leave!

Alice, Colchester

I stayed at The Old Stable both the night before my wedding and two nights following. Joanna is an exceptional host who went over and above to make our stay special. Each day the house was cleaned and prepared for the evening, meaning we always came back to a beautiful and tidy environment; it was such a treat! There was plenty of space downstairs for myself, my bridesmaids and the makeup and hairstylists to get ready on the morning of my wedding; the bright and airy kitchen area which opens onto a beautiful garden and swimming pool made this even more of a special morning.

Victoria, Lichfield

Perfection - beautiful, luxury accommodation with a wonderful host. Amazing 5 star breakfast. I stayed 3 nights and had a swim after work in the evenings in their lovely pool. I had The Stables completely to myself and that made it extra special. I want to return as soon as I can.

Karen, Hereford

A fabulous retreat. We loved everything: the room, location, the pool, the wee kitchen, the breakfast. Was a fabulous trip and Joanna could not have been more helpful. Would highly recommend. First time using Sawdays and will definitely be using again. We also enjoyed exploring the local area and only a £6 taxi into town! Thank you Joanna for your hard work. We hope to be back!

Probably the best value of the 12 UK Sawday's I have stayed at in recent years. Spotless modern facilities in a beautifully restored Stable, with the use of a wonderful bright lounge and dining area. Joanna is a truly delightful and knowledgeable host and nothing is too much trouble - I will be back!

An absolute delight. The Old Stable is beautifully furnished and so comfortable. The gardens are a joy. We were made to feel really welcome by the owners so it was a lovely, happy stay.

Marion, Chichester

We had a delightful stay for 4 nights at The Old Stable - the breakfasts were delicious, with home made bread and granola, and a wide choice of cooked breakfasts. Joanna, our host, was so friendly and helpful, and her many personal touches made the rooms delightful. We would definitely recommend this as a lovely place to stay.

Julie, ROMSEY

What a beautiful place. We stayed with our two children so had the place to ourselves. It felt like a cottage but with the added bonus of the most amazing breakfast we have ever had (so much choice), served by the loveliest lady, Joanna. The upstairs room was enormous, with the most comfy bed and pillows. Everything we needed was available, with added extras such as homemade cookies and fresh milk. Couldn't recommend more highly.

Natalie, London

We stayed for one night in the Hayloft which was stunning! The owner had obviously put her heart and soul into turning the old barn into a luxurious but extremely comfortable B&B. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The host warm and friendly. We would highly recommend a stay at The Old Stable.

We have just returned from our third visit to this outstanding bed and breakfast in rural Suffolk. Yes, it is in a very rural and peaceful location ensuring a relaxing stay but it is also within easy driving distance of historical Bury St. Edmunds. It's the best of both worlds! We will remember sitting eating supper outside in the warmth of an August evening at a huge garden table next to the swimming pool surrounded by a simply stunning garden. Everything here is high quality, including the furniture, fittings and breakfast. To top it all Joanna is the perfect host. Thank you.

PAMELA, Preston

This place surpasses all expectations! Arriving on a searingly hot July afternoon, we were warmly welcomed by Joanna and ushered into the cool of the beautifully converted, spacious and comfortable old stable. Stepping out onto the terrace, we slipped into the bliss of the inviting, private swimming pool... A peek through the fence revealed happy hens dashing here and there, pausing occasionally to lay our breakfast eggs on the ground. Awoke to the comforting aroma of newly baking bread, and found a wondrous breakfast brought to our door. Everywhere there was beauty. Heaven!

Carol and David, London

On our personal scale of 1 to 5, The Old Stables has to rate a 6. If there is anything Joanna hasn't thought of we don't know what it is. Outstanding in every respect.

Paul & Cheryl, Edenbridge, Kent

What a wonderful find! Peaceful situation, wonderful welcome, fabulous spaces in the Old Stable, and very luxurious too. Breakfast was delicious, homemade fruit compote, bread, honey and great hot dishes too. We can't wait to go back.

Celia, London

An absolutely wonderful place to stay. So much more than a B&B. Joanna and Christopher have cleverly renovated the old stables into a very beautiful space, with tasteful fittings and furnishings and an extremely comfortable and huge bed. A large bathroom has a bath and a walk-in shower. Joanna is a wonderful hostess and her love of cooking and general home-making is obvious with home-made muesli, bread and jams for breakfast. Don't miss the garden either which is open under the NGS "Yellow Book" scheme and is absolutely beautiful. Yes, we loved it!

Veronica, Stroud

The Old Stable is a rare find and a real treat. I was warmly welcomed on arrival by Joanna who has lovingly restored this beautiful building sympathetically and stylishly. Joanna has thought of many special touches; fluffy towels, a wide selection of teas and homemade yummy biscuits! My favourite thing was breakfast where I was spoilt for choice. Almost everything is homemade or locally sourced. Freshly baked bread, eggs from Joanna's hens, delicious homemade museli & granola and honey from her bees which is one of the best I've tried. I will certainly be returning and would highly recommend.
