The
Experience

On top of a hill with countryside views, the cottage is part of a patchwork of 16th-century stone farm buildings beautifully renovated by Rupert and Franck who live in the former tobacco barn nearby.Country walks lead from the house, you can hire bikes to explore nearby hamlets and villages and swim or canoe on the Dordogne. Hop in the car to visit local markets and brocantes, and you can help yourself to fruit from the orchard and produce from the veg garden; your hosts leave you with wine and home-made jam and an artisan baker delivers in the mornings. It’s peaceful here, the only sound the distant chime of church bells across the valley. As the sun goes down fire up the barbecue in your private garden area or get cosy round the roaring fire. Either way uncork the wine.

Reviews

This was our second stay at this property. This first time we enjoyed Le Mas with friends. We returned to Le Mazet for a more intimate stay, lured by the graciousness of our hosts Rupert and Franck and the serenity of the Dordogne. A land of green and gold and gorgeous sunsets even the rainy days were a delight. Le Mazet was perfect for our exploration of the Dordogne and we loved returning with our market finds to cook a meal and enjoy the property at days end.

Le Mazet completely surpassed our expectations. It is a beautiful house in gorgeous grounds. The views are stunning and the smell of lavender with a morning coffee in Le Mazet's garden was just the best to start to the day (made all the better by a morning delivery from the baker). The house has everything you need for a great stay. I especially loved the coffee machine with attached milk frother and the big walk in shower. Rupert and Frank are fantastic hosts and could not have done more to make us feel welcome and help us have a great trip. We would love to come back and visit again.

Amazing place, Rupert and Franck made us feel welcome the moment we arrived at their stunning property. They missed nothing to ensure we had a first class week holiday. From their own homemade jams to go with the morning bread orders, to the suggested “not to be missed” restaurant list. The location is beautiful and the atmosphere was so relaxing that we didn’t want to leave. I honestly can’t recommend it enough, we will definitely be back. Thank you Rupert and Franck.

This was our first visit to Le Mazet and we cannot wait to return. The whole experience from start to finish was truly fabulous. We were here with our friends and so had both Le Maz & Le Mazet and they are both equally beautiful. Rupert and Franck have thought of everything to make something really special for their guests , they are the most amazing hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. Le Mazet is a wonderful hideaway for two with everything you could want, with its own beautiful outside space and the bench perfectly placed for watching the sunsets. Bliss!

Le Mazet is a gorgeous little retreat for two; we have visited several times and are always impressed with how clean and well-equipped it is, how beautifully furnished it is, and how stunning the view is across the fields to some of the most impressive sunsets I have ever seen. The owner's can't do enough to help should you need it, however they are incredibly discreet and you could easily not see them all week should you be looking for total independence. This is a perfect spot from which to explore the Dordogne, it works really well both hired with Le Mas for larger groups, and on it's own.

We have just returned home from a week in Le Mazet and Le Mas. My mother in law stayed in Le Mazet whilst the rest of the family stayed in Le Mas. Le Mazet was beautifully styled with everything having been considered to make ones stay perfect. The property has been decorated to an extremely high standard with luxurious touches like White Company toiletries. The surrounding gardens and countryside beyond are breathtaking. This really is an idyllic place. My mother in law is very keen to go back!

Le Mazet offers charming, thoughtful accomodation for two in an idyllic setting. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful, they have thought of everything to ensure a perfect stay including tasty treats, restaurantand visit recommendations

A little piece of paradise, we stayed in Le Mazet for a week and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the place. Rupert and Franck's attention to detail was evident everywhere we looked. Plus the Dordogne area was beautiful and we had many great recommendations for enjoyable days out. We hope to return soon.

Le Mazet is a very well converted and designed house with lots of attention to detail. Its location is perfect if relaxation and nice walks are what you are looking for. This part the Dordogne is particularly beautiful. Our stay was excellent. Rupert and Franck were both extremely helpful.

Absolutely tip top. My wife and I booked for a few days R&R to relax and get away from it all and Le Mazet ticked all of the boxes. Rupert and Franck were perfect - available if required and very welcoming. The attention to detail and quality in what they have done with the property is superb, and it is the little touches that make the experience even more memorable - being able to order fresh bread and croissants every morning, the home made preserves included, and plenty of wood for the wood burner. We cannot recommend it enough and look forward to returning.

We stayed in Le Mazet at Christmas time- everything was perfect from the moment we arrived. The house is beautifully situated looking out on a wonderful vista: sunsets are particularly lovely. Rupert and Frank paid attention to every detail- I have rarely stayed anyplace with such a sense of immediate comfort and coziness- from the fire burning upon arrival to the Christmas tree decorated and waiting for us. Oh- and the availability of fresh bread waiting for us each morning was AMAZING. And the Nespresso..... Can’t wait to return!!!

Le Mazet is a truely great place in a fabulous location with very kind and considerate hosts! Fully loaded with everything you need for a complete holiday. The house is very special with its ancient walls, lovely fireplace and well equipped kitchen. The beds are spectacularly comfortable. This holiday let ticks all the boxes. We will come back soon and will recommend to friends and familiy.

Maximilian, Winterthur

We spent a fabulous 5 days staying at Le Mazet. The accommodation contains all the comforts of home and more. Rupert and Franck have thought of everything to ensure that guests can relax and enjoy the facilities. It is the perfect place to just chill and do nothing or explore the local area. We did a bit of both and our only regret is that we couldn't stay any longer. We would definately stay again and will be recommending Le Mazet and it's sister accommodation Le Mas to friends and family.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in the middle of the countryside here; the hamlet of Sainte-Croix with its 12th century church can be glimpsed from the cottage - it’s 2km away, or a 20-minute walk. The nearest restaurant in Montferrand du Périgord, is 3km, just over a half hour’s walk. Within 15 minutes’ drive (or 9km) are two fortified towns, Monpazier and Beaumont; both have weekly markets, restaurants and shops and Beaumont has a supermarket and a night market.

Local points of interest from Rupert Springfield

  • The Times included Le Mazet in their 50 Best Holidays in France 2019 list, and The Daily Telegraph reviewed us online with a score of 9/10. Links on our website. The French Ministry of Tourism has awarded Le Mazet with 4 stars.
  • Le Mazet is situated between Monpazier and Beaumont, both beautiful bastide (fortified) towns built by Edward I of England. They have restaurants, shops, café terraces and artisan bakeries. The Dordogne is steeped in history and has stunning nature.
  • There is a great 30 minute walk from the house past a 12th century church with original wall paintings, through a wood to a ruined castle towering over a beautiful Dordogne village, ending at a restaurant serving drinks and delicious food.
  • The garden is full of fruit trees which you are welcome to pluck and you'll find home-made jams and produce in your welcome pack. For fresh fruit and veg there are markets in the surrounding towns most days of the week.
  • We can arrange for a private chef to bring you pre-prepared dishes which you just need to warm up. Very handy for your day of arrival. We also have a local baker deliver here every morning so you can stay longer in bed.
  • Situated on top of a hill, the houses offer stunning uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and the 12th century church, whose bells you can hear across the valley.

Introducing

Rupert Springfield

Rupert worked for many years for charities and as an antique dealer; his Dutch husband Franck was a theater producer for Cirque du Soleil. The farmhouse was completely renovated in 2016 by the interior designer Joris van Grinsven, who respected the history and character of the building but brought it bang up to date.
