The Experience

A great place for a family holiday, a yoga retreat, a painting workshop or a team building with colleagues. The B&B is in the main house where guests are free to use the compact communal kitchen for light lunches before heading off to explore Cognac or Angoulême. There are two lovely barns, one with pub tables and a bar for parties or weddings and the other perfect for yoga sessions or seminars. Bedrooms (two on the ground floor, three on the first) have good mattresses and fine views.

Breakfasts of fresh fruit salad, viennoiseries and bread with homemade jams are served in the sunny dining room by Marie-Laure; dinner is four courses and worth staying in for but you need to book it in advance. There are three stunning self-catering cottages with plenty of communal space to entertain.

Find a peaceful spot in the courtyard while children play in the park and splash in the swimming pool in the pretty walled garden.

Reviews

Marie-Laure is discreet and charming and this is a heavenly place to nip away to for a weekend in a group and enjoy all the comforts of a hotel but in a Maison D'hôtes setting. You'll love winding around the country lanes and picking up Melon Charentais or a bottle of locally made Pineau des Charentes. The light is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and elegant, so relax and enjoy the simplicity.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are rolling fields of vines as far as the eye can see. Walks and cycles will be tranquil and bird-filled. Criteuil is 3km and has a good restaurant serving classic local dishes. Barbezieux, 10km, is the nearest town, famous for its black hens and with some interesting churches and architecture. Angoulême with its Roman sites is 40km. Segonzac and Jarnac are 11km for water sports and Cognac for its famous distilleries.

Local points of interest from Marie-Laure Fornas

  • This early 18th Century Logis, on the edge of a small hamlet surrounded by vine-covered hills, was used originally to house 500 horses of Louis X1V's army, garrisoned there to fight the English.
  • In the 19th Century it became a Cognac distillery, which ceased to run in the 1960's, and was then largely abandoned. Now there is a piano bar with the old copper stills, opening onto the pool garden and the park.
  • The huge barn is a party room with billiards and ping pong, there is a croquet lawn, tree house and swings, bicycles to use. Secure within the walls, children can run free in the 3 hectares of garden.
  • Cognac, Angouleme, Chateauneuf and Jarnac, all nearby, are pretty towns on the beautiful river Charente - you can swim, canoe, take boat trips and picnic along its banks, taste the local Pineau and Cognac, and try the many shops and restaurants.
  • The lovely, unspoilt western coastline is an hour's drive from the Logis Du Paradis, visit the wild beaches of Iles de Ré and d'Oleron, the port of La Rochelle, taste oysters at Marennes, wander through the cobbled streets and arty shops of Talmont.
  • The zoo at Royan is a day's outing, St Palais sur Mer idyllic for parents and children alike. Eat fresh fish at Bob's, build sand castles and swim in gently lapping waves or take a stroll along the headland and coastal paths.
