The Experience

Thick stone walls, deep window sills and original flooring provide an authentic backdrop for a superb collection of antique and mid-century furniture, oil paintings, botanical prints, vintage mirrors and pretty china. Your nods to the 21st century are swish bathrooms, a very well-equipped kitchen with a posh coffee machine and, in the separate snug, a massive drop-down film screen which doubles as a picture window for those views.

Summer days will keep you outdoors. There’s a sprawling lawn for games, a swing and seats under mature ash, field maple and alder. To the side of the house find a decking area for outdoor meals and a barbecue. The beach is nearby for picnics and walks are endless.

Return to a deep tub or walk-in shower with scented Donegal soaps, an attractive sitting room with electric and steam fire and big brass beds with woollen throws. The peace is profound and on clear nights you’ll see a canopy of stars.

Reviews

We have had a great time staying here in the Oul House. Our kids really loved the projector and movies in the sung. We have been so impressed with the work that you have done - it is a beautiful home. We would love to return in the summer months and hope to do that in future.

Anne

Our second time to visit this beaulifull house. Still love it.

Donna

A grand spot in wonderful countryside for enjoying hill walking, wildlife and bird-watching, views over bay and the Atlantic, a beach to stumble to and a very pretty cottage to come home to, filled with lovely old things that are just the ticket for such an ancient building but with all mod cons too.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a half-hour brisk walk into Ballyliffin for shops, a bar, a good golf course and Nancy's Barn which serves superb food including award-winning seafood chowder. The Wild Atlantic Way is worth a day out in the car (or on a bike for the adventurous) with magnificent views. For bigger shops drive 15 minutes to Clonmany which has a festival in August. You'll also find the Glenevin Waterfall here.

Local points of interest from Patrick & Carolyn McClay

  • Explore the rugged wilderness Donegal has to offer while strolling along the many hill and cliff trails or deserted golden sand beaches
  • Enjoy award winning food at Nancy's Barn, a creamy pint at Irelands most northly pub Farren's Bar, or live music at Jacks Bar, the Glen Bar or The Cottage Bar
  • Ballyliffin Golf Club, visible from the cottage, is located just 2 minutes away with 36 holes. Widely regarded as the finest links complex in Ireland, boasting two championship links courses, along with 9 other near by courses.
  • Take a trip back in time exploring Doagh Famine Village, or observe Ireland’s lost wildlife, encounter brown bears, wolves, lynx and wild boar at Wild Ireland or trek with Alpacas in some of the most stunning scenery at Wild Alpaca Way.
  • Other places of interest nearby include the grand Glenveagh Castle and national park, the ancient Grianan of Aileach Hill Fort, the historic and bustling city of Derry, the Causeway coastal route and Sliabh Liag, the tallest sea cliffs in Europe.

Introducing

Patrick & Carolyn McClay

Affable Patrick, a local lad and builder by trade had much help from his dad and brother renovating this place. He has a very good eye for antiques and beautiful things which he collected from online auctions during Covid and he's hung pictures and placed furniture with aplomb. His other hobby is photography.
