The Experience

Close to the sophisticated delights of Bologna, Parma and Modena is a beautiful cluster of 17th-century buildings, home to three generations of the Crotti family who produce award-winning balsamic vinegar. The six B&B rooms (reached via a turreted stairway), suite and apartment for four, which has a small, top-notch kitchen for rustling up meals, are all deeply peaceful – shuttered windows gaze out to the gardens – and super stylish with original art, antique furniture and beautifully dressed beds. You breakfast in the beamed and open fire’d room that doubles as the tasting room for the vinegar tours (a must while you’re here) on home baked goodies, eggs from the hens, fruit, yoghurt, strong coffee. You’ll need a car to make the most of the area but foodies will be delighted by the gastronomic offerings: wine, Parma ham, Parmesan cheese and more; and Cristina will happily advise. The gardens are stunning all year and there is a pool for guests use but you should really come in May when the rose gardens are particularly spectacular.

Le Dimore del Borgo (just south of Reggio Emilia) now offers 9 spacious, airy light-filled guest rooms. We stayed on the first floor. Amazingly warm welcome and fabulous stay; pool was a real bonus after a long day touring. Rich heritage oozing with genuine zest for life. Greatest attention to detail all around. A real find worth seeking out, with very thoughtful, professional touches throughout. Take the tour of the attic and a balsamico tasting on your first day in order to enhance your experience. Breakfast is a homemade feast, served in the carriage way of the old restored stables.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place in a great region with a lot of things to do. The owners are warm and very helpful and made us feel at home. One of the best Sawday's places we have been! Not to speak for their Balsamic Vinegar. We brought a lot of bottles home.

Ruth, Berlin

This place is better than the photos. The property is stunning, very comfortable and full of interesting pieces of art and antiques. We stayed in the Cortina room which was spacious and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were delicious with a variety of locally source products. The whole property is immaculate. The grounds are lush and very romantic - the pool is a great size and very clean. The owners were very warm, hospitable and extremely helpful. It's a great region to visit with Parma, Mantova, Modena, Bologna not that far away, not to mention the Ferrari and Lamborghini!
