The Experience
Cut through woods on a narrow dirt road to reach this 19th-century farmhouse, perched on a hillside and surrounded by vineyards and forest. There are two other self-catering properties on this 700-acre wine estate but they’re set wide apart, so you’ll feel utterly secluded and private.
The estate’s owners stay here when they visit, and have furnished the house with their own antiques and original artworks, many depicting the local area. Find the basics for a first breakfast plus wine and olive oil from the estate as a welcome; you can rustle up feasts in the modern kitchen, fire up the barbecue and dine al fresco or try out nearby restaurants.
Manager Silvia bubbles over with ideas about how to enjoy the Valdera’s gastronomic highlights: on foot through Saletta’s woods, guided by a local truffle hunter, or on a scenic drive to visit a one-of-its kind cheese “grotto” in the neighbouring medieval village of Lari. You could spend all your time exploring the Valdera’s slow-paced delights, but Volterra and Pisa are a 45-minute drive and Florence and Siena are 1.5 hours.

Location
The neighbourhood
A thick binder in the house is filled with information on what to do and see. The nearby town of Forcoli offers all the basics for food shopping and a bank and pharmacy, and the nearest restaurant, Ristorante Pettirosso in Palaia, is less than 10 minutes’ drive. There are nearly 70 km of well-marked walking paths meandering through the immediate surroundings of the estate and countryside tours on Vespas through the countryside can also be arranged. Pontedera (15 km) is the closest hub with a train station and links to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, the seaside and beyond.

Introducing
Silvia Caroti
Julia and Guy Hands have travelled and worked around the world, but fell in love with this area of Italy years ago. After they bought Villa Saletta, they hired a dynamic and youthful team to manage the winery, rental villas and several ambitious future projects. Silvia is the main contact for guests. She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and is well-connected locally as she's from nearby Ponsacco.
Absolutely every detail has been thought of to guarantee total comfort and privacy in this historic countryside setting. You will not want to miss learning more about Villa Saletta's winery and farming, especially on a guided walk through the vineyards or a truffle hunt in the woods. The Valdera is a surprisingly rich territory for foodies, walkers and art lovers.
