The Experience

You are within the ancient town walls and surrounded by history: high on a hill, this compact white town has narrow, twisting old-town streets, Moorish influences, a ruined castle and some surprisingly good restaurants. From the street you enter a partly covered courtyard with two sets of terracotta steps leading upwards, shaded by sails and with big pots full of tumbling plants. The salon, always cool even in summer, is in the old part of the house with a beautiful beamed ceiling, big sofa and a chaise longue.

Up outdoor steps to a double and a twin, plain and simple with white cotton, wooden shutters and elegant mosquito nets draping the beds. Cross over a bridge to the main bedroom with original black and white tiled floor, skylights and a wood-burner for chilly nights. Views from all are across rooftops to the church.

Cook in the ample kitchen, eat in the courtyard or up on the spectacular roof terrace with its dreamy views.

Reviews

Come to feel enveloped in the bustle and fun of this lovely old white town, literally clinging to the rocky hillside. Eat in oodles of good restaurants, shop in the market, head to the coast for wild waves, return to a characterful, quirky house. Great fun.

What an amazing house with all the rooms coming off one central open courtyard. Quite a sight as you enter through a set of large wooden doors from the quiet mainly pedestrian street. From the second level there are steps to a fabulous roof terrace with views over the small town and across the plains. Amazing. The town is full of narrow streets, bars and restaurants. So buzzing and friendly. We never got bored discovering new places some of them just a few steps away. Beaches only 15 mins away by car too. We will definitely return to this beautiful house and town.

Location

The neighbourhood

Stock up at the good butcher or fishmonger shops or at the indoor market (every morning except Sunday). There are buzzing wine bars with tapas, Spanish fusion or traditional food, a taco bar, an Italian restaurant and the best sushi in the area. There is an open-air cinema in summer and a good theatre. Explore ancient churches and the ruined castle, hoover up history.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Lincoln

  • El Palmar 10km by car. Vejer's closest beach is a 12km stretch of utterly stunning golden sand. There are restaurants & outdoor activity a plenty, our favourite area is to the quiet south & northern ends the cows graze overlooking the dunes.
  • Villages in the area are no more than a 10-20 min drive, Cadiz is approx 40min, Tarifa and beaches are 30 mins, Jerez is 45 mins and Seville 1.5hr. All have great things to offer including the famous Sherry houses of the area.
  • Cape Trafalgar (scene of the famous battle) is just 15km. from Vejer and its white sand beaches are quite unblemished by any type of development. In fact this area is famous in Spain for the ‘virgin’ quality of the beaches.
  • Plaza de España - A meeting place with numerous cafes and bars around the outside. In the centre there is an ornate ceramic fountain featuring 4 frogs. The town hall is located in the square and a notable feature is the facade of the fabled Casa de la Inquis.
  • Cadiz just 40 mins by car Founded 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, Cádiz is the oldest city in Western Europe. Its a must to visit this wonderful port town and there's a gorgeous beach for when the heat is on.
  • Vejer's Arab Castle, Walls and Arches - The city walls are very much still intact and you can climb up on to them at various points. Vejer has become a meca for foodies check the website for top tips.
